Los Angeles Defeats Bakersfield In Nail Bitter
February 4, 2010 - NBA G League (G League)
Los Angeles D-Fenders News Release
Bakersfield, CA - The Bakersfield Jam came awfully close to grabbing their first back-to-back victories of the season, but fell just short when Reece Gaines' contested three-pointer rimmed out as the buzzer sounded to end a 105-102 loss at the hands of the Los Angeles D-Fenders.
Los Angeles got a tremendous performance from forward Diamon Simpson, who scored 18 points on 8-for-13 shooting and filled up the rest of the stat sheet with 15 big rebounds, six assists, three steals and three blocks. D-Fenders center Michael Fey also impressed on the offensive end, scoring a team-high 23 points on 10-for-14 and adding six rebounds and two blocks.
Bakersfield had seven of their nine healthy players score in double digits - including newcomer Keith Brumbaugh scoring a game- and season-high 27 points - but never could get over the top down the stretch. With the D-Fenders leading by only one in the final ten seconds, Jeremy Wise (16 pts, 7 ast, st, bl) found Blake Ahearn (16 pts, 8 ast, 4 st) for a corner three-pointer that wouldn't drop and neither Wise nor Brian Butch (14 pts, 7 reb) could get tip-ins to go before Joe Crawford grabbed the rebound and was fouled.
After Crawford converted two free throws to push the D-Fenders lead to three and his point total to 19 on the evening, leading to the game-ending miss from Gaines (19 pts, 5 ast) who nearly converted from several feet behind the three-point line and over the outstretched hand of L.A.'s Frank Robinson. In addition to his tough defense on the final play - and throughout the game - Robinson managed 15 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals just one night after a sore hamstring limited his playing time and production.
The D-Fenders return from their eight-game road trip, Monday February 8 as they take on the Tulsa 66ers at 3:30pm PST at the STAPLES Center. Tune in to the NBA Futurecast at www.nba.com/futurecast to watch your Los Angeles D-Fenders in a battle versus the Tulsa 66ers.
