New Mexico Thunderbirds News Release

ALBUQUERQUE, NM, Feb. 4, 2010 - A pair of Thunderbirds have been selected to participate in NBA Development League All-Star Dream Factory Friday Night presented by Haier. The skills competition returns for the third consecutive year to Center Court at NBA Jam Session presented by adidas on Friday, Feb. 12, at 10:00 p.m. ET, and will stream live on NBA.com from 10-11p.m. ET.

Thunderbirds guard/forward Tony Danridge has been selected to compete in the 2010 NBA D-League Slam Dunk competition. The NBA Development League also announced that T-Birds 2010 NBA D-League All-Star Carlos Powell will compete in the Haier Shooting Stars contest. Both events will take place during NBA Development League Dream Factory Friday Night presented by Haier.

Danridge will compete against Dar Tucker (Los Angeles), Bill Walker (Maine) and Deron Washington (Tulsa) as the four players showcase their best high-flying skills in a battle for slam dunk supremacy. The competition consists of two rounds of two dunks each with the top scores from the first round advancing to the championship round.

Danridge won the NCAA Slam Dunk Contest at the 2009 Final Four, and has made numerous appearances on highlight reels during his college and professional career. To see highlights from his memorable NCAA Slam Dunk Contest performance, click the following link:

Powell will compete in the NBA D-League Haier Shooting Stars competition in addition to the NBA D-League All-Star game on Saturday, February, 13. The NBA D-League Haier Shooting Stars contest features six numbered shooting locations of increasing difficulty, with each team attempting to make all shots in numeric order in the fastest time. Each team will select a specific player rotation to follow throughout the competition. Each shot must be made before the next player begins shooting in succession. Teams have up to two minutes to complete the entire shooting course and the team that completes all six shots in the least amount of time is declared the winner. In the case of a tie, a shoot-off will be used to determine the winner.

Powell is currently leading the Thunderbirds in scoring (22.8), assists (4.7), steals (1.7) and minutes per game (39.0).

The T-Birds will be in action on Feb. 5 when they again host the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. Call 505.265.3865 for information on how you can bring a group to the game for as low as $4 per person.
