Tulsa 66ers News Release
OREM, Utah, February 3, 2010 - In a well-played game that saw both teams shoot over 55 percent from the field, the Tulsa 66ers were defeated by the Utah Flash 111-103 Wednesday night at the McKay Events Center in Orem, UT. The 66ers shot 42-74 (56.8 percent) from the floor, while the Flash came up with 34-point first and fourth quarters en route to shooting 59.2 percent (45-76) for the game.
Tied at nine apiece early in the first quarter, the Flash streaked out on a 19-4 run capped by an Oriene Greene three-pointer and a Dontell Jefferson lay-in with three minutes left in the period. Five straight points for Tulsa's Moses Ehambe to end the quarter cut the Flash advantage to 34-26 at the break. Led by Greene's 12 first quarter points, the Flash shot 15-of-21 in the period, while the 66ers shot 11-for-23.
Down by 10 at 40-30 with nine minutes remaining in the second quarter, another Ehambe jumper sparked an 8-2 run that cut the Flash lead to four with 7:23 left in the first half. The 66ers allowed only 16 second quarter points by Utah, as Deron Washington led Tulsa with seven points, and went into halftime only trailing 50-49.
Three steals by Larry Owens early into the third quarter, in addition to four points, sparked a 10-0 run that gave the 66ers their first lead since early in the game at 61-56 with 8:25 left. The Flash battled back to within one, after a Greene three-pointer and Brian Hamilton put back made the score 66-65 with just over five minutes remaining in the quarter. But two straight threes by Cecil Brown pushed the 66ers lead back to seven, and they held on to post a 79-77 lead going into the fourth quarter. The 66ers shot 70.6 percent (12-17) from the field in the quarter and forced five turnovers by the Flash, while Utah shot 12-for-21 (57.1 percent) from the floor.
Trailing for nearly the entire second half, the Flash battled back until Greene buried a three-pointer from the corner to put Utah ahead for good at 88-86 with 6:35 remaining in the game. That shot sparked a 13-2 run by the Flash, giving them a 98-88 edge with 4:21 remaining. NBA D-League All-Star Mustafa Shakur would not let the 66ers go away in the final minutes however, as he book-ended a dunk by Chris Richard with two threes to cut the Utah lead to five with 1:37 remaining. Jefferson and Shakur led their teams with 10 points each in the fourth quarter, as Utah scored 34 points in the period on 61.1 percent shooting.
The 66ers (13-13) finished with five players in double-figures. Brown finished with a team-high 21 points, while Shakur had 20 points and six assists. Owens added 18 points, six rebounds and four steals, and Washington came off the bench for 12 points. Ehambe added 10 off the bench as well for Tulsa.
The Flash (16-13) were led by Greene with a season-high 32 points, and eight rebounds. Jefferson finished with 19 points, while Carlos Wheeler contributed 16 points and nine boards. Bennet Davis came off the bench to 16 points, and Luke Nevill had 12 points.
