Vipers Acquire NBA Development League's All-Time Leading Scorer

December 30, 2009 - NBA G League (G League)
Rio Grande Valley Vipers News Release

MCALLEN, TEXAS - The NBA Development League Rio Grande Valley Vipers announced today that they have acquired point guard Will Conroy (6-2, 195, Washington) from the Albuquerque Thunderbirds for center Kurt Looby (6-10, 230, Iowa).

Conroy is the NBA Development League's all-time leader in points (2,779), minutes played (5,852), free throws made (660), free throws attempted (948) and assists (1,267). He is also third all-time in steals (238).

"We think that Conroy will bring a high level of talent to the point guard position for the RGV Vipers. Obtaining a top flight point guard will provide our team with its best chance at success and is also crucial to the continual development of our primary players. We paid a costly price in trading Kurt Looby, a valued RGV Viper, but it was worth the cost to obtain a talented individual that we value at both the NBA and the NBADL levels," Vipers General Manager Gersson Rosas said.

Conroy will arrive in the Rio Grande Valley tonight.

The last cut in Houston Rockets training camp, Conroy averaged 6.0 points 2.6 assists in five games before going overseas. The Thunderbirds retained his NBA Development League rights, though.

"We targeted Conroy as one of the top free agent point guards last season and as a result he was invited to join both our summer league team and our veteran training camp. He led our summer league team to an undefeated record and after a very successful camp was the last cut off our training camp roster. We were encouraged by Will's ability to run the Houston Rockets offense and his consistent effort on the defensive end. Additionally, he brought positive intangibles off the court. His maturation and success through those platforms has resulted in Will being the Houston Rockets top free agent point guard prospect at this point. So the opportunity to have Will with the RGV Vipers, where he will work with a great coaching staff and be supervised by the Houston Rockets staff, while continuing to run our system, was too good to pass up," said Rosas, who is also the Rockets Vice President of Player Personnel.

Conroy averaged a league-leading 26.5 points to go with 8.0 assists (sixth in the league) and 4.8 rebounds in 47 games, all starts, for the Thunderbirds while playing a league-best 44.9 minutes per game last season. Conroy garnered All-NBA Development League First Team honors and broke the single-game scoring record when he netted 53 points against the Colorado 14ers in a 155-127 loss on April 8. Additionally, he was a 2009 NBA Development League All-Star, the winner of the 2009 NBA Development League H.O.R.S.E. competition, a two-time named NBA Development League Performer of the Week, and NBA Development League Co-Player of the Month in January.

Conroy also earned the 2009 Jason Collier Sportsmanship Award, presented to the player who best represents the ideals of character and conduct on and off the court.

"Will is a veteran who has matured through his time in the NBA and the NBADL and fully understands the philosophy of the Houston Rockets both on and off the court and we look forward to the impact he will bring to the RGV Vipers and the community. We look for Will to provide leadership to our young roster in the same fashion that Mike Harris did before he was called up. Will has aspirations to get back to the NBA and he understands that in order to achieve that he has to be successful and meet expectations both on and off the court during his time at RGV," Rosas said.

Conroy received two GATORADE Call-Ups during the 2006-07 season, playing in three games with the Memphis Grizzlies and four games with the Los Angeles Clippers. Overall, he picked up nine assists and seven rebounds in 51 minutes of action. Conroy earned All-NBA Development League Second Team honors that season after averaging 15.0 points, 5.1 rebounds and 10.6 assists per game. He also received All-NBA Development League Honorable Mention during the 2005-06 season.

Looby is averaging 3.3 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.6 blocks in 11 games.
