Iowa Wolves News Release
DES MOINES, IA, Dec. 29, 2009 - It took three overtimes, but the Iowa Energy improved their D-League leading record to 11-1 with a 140-137 triple overtime win Tuesday in Des Moines.
The outcome appeared settled as Ft. Wayne led the game 137-134 with only :09 remaining in the third overtime. Mad Ant guard Oliver Lafayette went to the free throw line for two shots to attempt to seal the victory. Despite being a 73% free throw shooter on the year, Lafayette missed both free throws. Energy forward Cartier Martin played the role of hero again for the Energy, hitting a leaning three pointer to tie the game with :04 left. After a timeout, Martin stole the ball from Mad Ant Rob Kurz and was fouled on his way to the hoop. Because Martin was in the clear when fouled, the referees assessed a "clear path foul", awarding the Energy two free throws and the ball. Martin made one of two free throws to give Iowa the lead. Energy guard Pat Carroll nailed to free throws just seconds later to secure the win.
Ft. Wayne jumped out to a 38-28 lead at the end of the first quarter before Iowa stormed back to take a 67-51 halftime lead. Iowa outrebounded Ft. Wayne 65-48 in the game.
Iowa was led by Jeff Trepagnier, who finished the game with 34 points including seven 3-point baskets. Energy point guard Curtis Stinson had a triple-double in the victory, finishing with 14 points, 11 rebounds and an NBA D-League season high 21 assists.
Ft. Wayne's Oliver Lafayette finished with 30 points and 14 assists while Ron Howard added 29. The loss drops Ft. Wayne to 6-6 on the season.
Iowa heads on the road for their next five games before returning to Des Moines on Saturday, January 9th for their annual "70's Night Throwback Game". This year's throwback game will take place at Veteran's Memorial Auditorium in downtown Des Moines.
