Victoria Seals Trounced In Tucson
June 2, 2010 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Victoria Seals News Release
Embarking on their first road trip of the season, the Victoria Seals travelled to Hi Corbett Field in Tucson, Arizona to square off against the Tucson Toros, who had lost seven straight coming in. Handing the ball to Jason Kershner (1-0) for the start, the Arizona native matched up against Tucson left-hander Vince Davis (0-1).
With the Toros' starter settling into a grove early on, Tucson jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the second inning. A double off the bat of Wally Backman Jr., combined with an error to Seals shortstop Brian Rios, set up an RBI single from Ryan Priddy for a 1-0 lead.
As Davis carried his perfect game through four innings, Tucson kicked down the door in the bottom half of the fourth frame. A lead-off walk to Priddy followed by a single to Luis Apodaca and another base on balls to Davis loaded the bases before Jose Valdez drove home a pair to make it 3-0 Toros.
After a sacrifice fly courtesy of Victor Ferrante made it 4-0 Tucson, while three-straight base hits from Cristobal (Mayobanex) Santana, Priddy and Apodaca cashed another five runs and rounded out an eight-run bottom of the fourth inning, leaving the home side up 9-0.
Responding with a run in the top half of the fifth, Shane Cronin broke up Davis' gem with a base hit and Chris Van Rossum drove in Victoria's first of the game on an RBI double. The Seals then made it a 9-2 game with the help of a single from Colin Moro that cashed Phil Ortez, who finished 1-for-1 in his Victoria debut.
With Nick Martin on in relief in the bottom of the sixth inning, a leaping catch at the warning track from Van Rossum that should have ended the inning proved to be the final swing of momentum, as the Victoria centrefielder dropped the ball after contact with the wall and the Toros went on to pad their lead. A pair of singles and the second triple of the inning from Josh Womack added three more runs to the home side's tally, leaving Tucson up 12-2 after six complete.
An RBI single from Dale Swinford in his Seals debut help Victoria add two more in the top of the eighth, but with no answer for Toros closer Emiliano Fruto, the Seals drop game one of the three game series by a 12-4 finale score.
Jason Kershner is tagged with his first loss of the season for the Seals, while Vince Davis' fantastic start improves his record to 1-1 on the year. Three hits from both Ryan Priddy and Luis Apodaca, along with five combined RBI's, led the way offensively for the Toros.
