Capitals Win Home Opener

Edmonton Capitals News Release

The Edmonton Capitals are perfect when it comes to Home Openers. A solid crowd of over 3,000 fans were treated to an entertaining night down at TELUS field that ended with an RBI single from former Major Leaguer Cliff Brumbaugh with 2 out in the bottom of the ninth to beat Maui Na Koa Ikaika 5 - 4. Some patience and textbook ball allowed the Caps to comeback and eventually win the game they didn't lead once until the bottom of the ninth inning. The rally was set up by a lead-off walk from Steve Brown coming off the bench followed by a sacrifice hit from Jorge Cortes to move Brown into scoring position and then capped off by Brumbaugh's single up to the gap in left field.

"There's nothing like playing in your home ballpark with the fans behind you." said Capitals Field Manager Brent Bowers. "That's the start to the home part of the schedule we were looking for. We got six strong innings from our starter Lou Pote and we never panicked at any point in this game. It was good fundamental baseball that won it for us in the end, I'm proud of our guys."

Maui Na Koa Ikaika jumped out to an early lead with a double steal followed by a bases loaded single from their pitcher David Seccombe who helped out his own cause and put the visitors ahead 3 nothing. The Caps had the answer in the home half of the inning with a two-run home run from Canadian kid Matt Rogelstad. His team leading third long ball of the season made it a 3 - 2 ball game.

With Maui up 4 - 2 in the sixth inning, former White Sox prospect Tom Collaro launched a solo shot over the wall in left-centre field to pull the Caps to within one. The tying run came courtesy of a Larry Bigbie RBI single in the seventh inning to set the stage for the Brumbaugh winning hit.

Chad Blackwell picked up the win for the Caps coming out of the bullpen to work the 9th inning. It was all sixes for starter Lou Pote who scattered six hits over six innings of work and fanning six Maui batters.

Next up for the Caps will be their first SONiC Wiener Wednesday of the season featuring $2 Capital Dogs. Chris Little will get the start for Edmonton who improves their record to 4 - 7 on the season.

Capitals season seats start at under $9 per game and individual game tickets are available for just $10 every game. Parking is just $5 for the game and kids food combos are just $3 dollars. Tickets are available at all Ticketmaster locations, the TELUS Field Box Office during regular business hours, at (780) 414-GOAL (4625) or online at capsbaseball.ca.
