Flyers Begin Five Game Series With Defending Champion Vipers
June 2, 2010 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Orange County Flyers News Release
First-year manager Paul Abbott and his Orange County Flyers head to The Stampede City to take on the defending GBL Champion Calgary Vipers in a five-game series at Foothills Stadium. Prior to the Vipers winning the 2009 Championship, Orange County bested Calgary in a deciding fifth game en route to the Flyers' 2008 GBL Championship. Before the Vipers joined the Golden Baseball League in 2008, the franchise was a part of the Northern League, advancing to the Northern League Championship series in 2007, meaning this franchise has been to three straight championship series. From 1985-2002, Foothills Stadium was home to the Triple-A Calgary Cannons of the Pacific Coast League. The Flyers lead the all-time series over the Vipers, 11-9.
Matt Durkin (0-0, 9.00 ERA) makes his third start of the year for the Flyers in today's baseball matinee. First pitch for today's game is at 12:35pm Pacific. This series will mark the first time this season that Abbott will utilize the full force of his starting rotation, as Durkin, Jesse Smith, Brett Smith, Byung-Hyun Kim and Manny Ayala will start for Orange County in this series.
