Orange County Flyers News Release

CALGARY, Alberta (June 2, 2010) - Former Major Leaguer Keith Ginter hit the first Grand Slam of the season for Orange County and Matt Durkin pitched seven innings for his first win of the season as the Flyers took the opener over the Calgary Vipers, 6-2, at Foothill Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. Orange County improved to 6-3 on the year while the Vipers fell to 6-4.

Ginter, a Fullerton High School alum, spent six years in the Major Leagues from 2000-2005.

Durkin, the GBL Pitcher of the Year in 2009, found his stride from last season, giving up just two runs off five hits while striking out three and walking two in seven innings of work, the longest outing for a Flyers starter this season.

The Flyers began the scoring with a pair of runs in the third inning, when the pitcher Durkin led off the inning with his first professional hit. Three batters later, Jimmy Rohan's sacrifice fly cashed Durkin, and Ben Johnson's RBI single gave the Flyers a 2-0 lead. With the single, Johnson extended his season-opening hitting streak to nine games.

Relievers Brandon Pullen and Bryan Harris combined to pitch a scoreless eighth and ninth inning to preserve the win for the Flyers.

The Flyers continue this five-game series in Calgary on Thursday as last season's 10-game winner Jesse Smith takes the mound for the Flyers against Calgary's Dusty Gober. First pitch is at 6:05pm Pacific, and the game can be heard live online through www.OrangeCountyFlyers.com.
