Tri-City ValleyCats News Release
BURLINGTON, VT - Bobby Wernes hit a two-run single to tie the game in the top of the ninth inning, but the Tri-City ValleyCats fell 6-5 to the Vermont Lake Monsters on a walk-off hit at Centennial Field, in Burlington, Vt., on Thursday night.
The contest, which was the first in a three-game set, was a back-and-forth game throughout, beginning in the top of the first inning, when Dexture McCall drove home Aaron Mizell with a two-out RBI single to right field, putting the 'Cats ahead 1-0.
The Lake Monsters fought right back, scoring twice in the bottom half of the frame, to take a 2-1 advantage.
That lead lasted until the top of the fifth, when Keach Ballard lead off with a single, moved to second on a single by Johnny Sewald, then scored on a double by Brooks Marlow. One batter later, Sewald scored on a Vermont error, to make the score 3-2 in favor of Tri-City.
However, the Lake Monsters scored once in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game, then went on to score runs in the seventh and eighth innings, to enter the ninth frame ahead 5-3.
Leading off the top of the ninth was Sewald, who walked on a 3-2 pitch. He was then followed by Marlow, who reached on a single, before both runners advanced into scoring position on a groundout by Aaron Mizell.
That brought up Wernes, who lined a 0-2 pitch from Vermont reliever Ryan Gorton into right field, bringing both runners home, tying the game at 5-5.
Unfortunately, the deadlock did not last long, as Lake Monsters left fielder Brett Siddall drove home center fielder Seth Brown with a game-winning RBI single to left field, giving the ValleyCats what was only their third walk-off defeat of the season.
The loss prevented Tri-City from giving Ed Romero his 128th victory as the manager of the ValleyCats, which would break the record of 127 wins, set by Gregg Langbehn, who managed the team from 2004-2006.
Romero will another chance at breaking Langbehn's record on Friday night, in the second game of this three-game set. On the mound for ValleyCats will be RHP Jose Hernandez (0-0, 1.29), with RHP Dustin Driver (1-4, 4.60) getting the start for the Lake Monsters.
