Cyclones Shut out Again, Lose 5-0 to Aberdeen

BROOKLYN, N.Y. (August 27, 2015) - It was déjà vu at MCU Park Thursday evening as the Cyclones failed to score a run for a second straight game. This time, they were shut out by the Aberdeen Ironbirds in a game that ended 5-0. Not only was Brooklyn unable to push a run across home plate but yet again it was a lack of offense and one half inning that would doom the Cyclones. A five-run fourth would be all Aberdeen needed to take the series opener while Brooklyn collected just four hits throughout the contest and failed to score a run for the eighth time this season.

RHP Jose Celas started the game but didn't stick around for long. He escaped from trouble in the first when two walks and a fielder's choice left two runners on with one out. Celas threw three straight balls to cleanup hitter Chris Shaw before the Aberdeen catcher grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the early threat.

The third frame was a different story. Celas walked three to load the bases with nobody out before being removed for RHP Craig Missigman who stepped in to save the day for his teammate. Missigman struck out two before inducing a ground ball to end the inning, allowing Brooklyn to escape without giving up a run. Celas finished the night with one hit and five walks allowed over 2.0 innings of work.

Missigman ran into some trouble of his own in the fourth, when Aberdeen would finally cash in. With one out, a double and an infield single positioned runners on first and second. A fielder's choice recorded the second out but put runners at the corners before a wild pitch brought home the game's first run. Aberdeen center fielder Cedric Mullins followed with an RBI triple, making it a 2-0 game. A wild pitch to the next batter allowed Mullins to score, extending the lead to 3-0. A single and back-to-back doubles plated two more Ironbirds, making it a 5-0 game before the inning was through. That would be more than enough for Aberdeen to take game one of this three game series.

Ironbird starter Zach Albin (2-5) was economical and effective, tossing six innings of shutout baseball while allowing just three hits and earning his second win of the season. Brooklyn managed a single in the first, third and fifth innings but rarely threatened Albin, who threw 51 strikes on 71 pitches.

RHP Johnny Magliozzi came on for Brooklyn in the fifth. Magliozzi allowed just two hits over three innings of relief while striking out two. LHP Ruben Reyes then tossed two innings of his own in the eighth and ninth, also allowing two hits and striking out two.

Even when the Ironbirds had to dig into their bullpen, the Cyclones failed to get any type of offense started. Over the last three innings, Brooklyn mounted just one hit, a Zach Mathieu double in the seventh. Jake Bray tossed two scoreless before Jay Flaa closed things out in the ninth, securing a 5-0 win for Aberdeen. Brooklyn ended the evening 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position and haven't scored a run over their last 19 innings played.

The Cyclones continue their three game series with Aberdeen on Friday, August 28th. First pitch is scheduled for 7: 00 PM as RHP Eddie Villasmil takes the hill for Brooklyn.
