Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release

NORWICH, CT-The Connecticut Tigers (30-31) needed a big win and they got one on Thursday as they defeated the Lowell Spinners (33-32) by a score of 3-2 on a Corey Baptist walk-off two-run base hit in the bottom of the 12th. It was the first walk-off win of the year for the Tigers.

With one out in the 12th shortstop Jose Zambrano singled off of Lowell pitcher Taylor Nunez (2-3) and moved to third after designated hitter Will Allen singled. The next batter was Baptist (2-6, 2 RBI) and he delivered the knock out punch as he ripped one into the leftfield corner plating both runners.

Lowell had just taken the lead in the top half of the inning against Tigers pitcher Andres Tejada (2-1). Centerfielder Tate Matheny reached on an infield single and moved to second on a throwing error by Zambrano. It was the first error of the year for Zambrano. Matheny then moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single from catcher Austin Rei (2-4, RBI).

Connecticut put the winning run on base in innings 9-11 but failed to score all three times. The Tigers trailed early as Lowell scored an unearned run off starter Tyler Alexander in the third. After Matheny reached on an error he scored on an RBI single by second basemen Chad De La Guerra.

The Tigers tied the game in the fifth on Steven Fuentes' first home run of the year. It was the first hit in the game against Lowell starter Dioscar Romero.

Alexander went the first three for Connecticut allowing just the unearned run on a single hit while striking out three and walking one. Ryan Milton made his Connecticut debut and pitched three and two third shutout innings and was followed by Jack Fischer and he fired three and a third shut out frames.

Tejada worked the final two getting the win as he allowed a couple hits and a run. Tiger pitching struck out a season high 13 on the night.

Romero went the first five for Lowell giving up just the solo home run. He struck out just one and walked four. Logan Boyd pitched well in relief throwing four and two third scoreless frames giving up just four hits. Nunez went the last inning and two thirds giving up the two runs on five hits.

Connecticut will play the second game of a three game series at home against Lowell on Friday. The first pitch tomorrow is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
