Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

BURLINGTON, VT --- Vermont got three straight one-out singles in the bottom of the ninth inning, including a Brett Siddall RBI walkoff single to give the Lake Monsters a 6-5 victory over the Tri-City ValleyCats on Thursday night at historic Centennial Field.

The ValleyCats had tied the game 5-5 in the top of the ninth on a Bobby Wernes one-out, two-run single off Ryan Gorton (1-1), who then retired the final two Tri-City batters of the inning. Reliever Zac Grotz (4-3) got Seong-min Kim to groundout to start the bottom of the ninth but Seth Brown followed with a line drive single to center and advanced to third on a Chris Iriart single just over the glove of second baseman Brooks Marlow into right field. Siddall then blooped a single over the drawn-in infield into left field to score Brown with the winning run.

The lead changed hands three times during the game as Vermont plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the first on back-to-back RBI singles from Brown and Iriart, but Tri-City took a 3-2 lead in the fifth on Marlow RBI double and a throwing error. The Lake Monsters tied the game in the bottom of the fifth on Brown's second RBI single of the game, then took a 4-3 lead in the seventh on Iriart's second RBI single of the game and added another run in the eighth on a run-scoring wild pitch.

Vermont tied a season-high with 16 hits in the game (also 16 at Staten Island on August 16th) and were also the most by a Lake Monsters team at Centennial Field since 16 hits vs. Batavia on August 4, 2012. Vermont had three players with a three-hit game as both Brown and Iriart were 3-for-5 with two RBI, while Richie Martin was 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and Trace Loehr was 2-for-5 with two runs. Marlow was 3-for-4 with a run, double and RBI for Tri-City, while Johnny Sewald was 2-for-4 with two runs (leads league with 45).

The win snapped a three-game losing streak for Vermont (27-36), which will host Tri-City in the second of the three-game series on Friday night at 7:05 pm as the Lake Monsters celebrate Halloween at the Ballpark.
