West Virginia Black Bears News Release
The West Virginia Black Bears improved their winning streak to four games after a 7-2 victory over the Mahoning Valley Scrappers on Thursday night at Monongalia County Ballpark. After tonight's win, West Virginia improves to an overall record of 35-30 while the Scrappers fall to 28-35 this season. The Black Bears continue to hold the top spot in the Wild Card Standings with eight games remaining after the win over Mahoning Valley.
West Virginia came out firing on Thursday night, getting an early jump on the Scrappers. In the first inning, C Christian Kelley and LF Ty Moore led things off with a back-to-back singles and then 2B Mitchell Tolman followed up by earning a base on balls. With the bases loaded, RF Ryan Nagle was issued a walk to give the Black Bears a 1-0 lead. 3B Ke'Bryan Hayes then grounded into a force out while crossing a run in the process to extend the lead to 2-0. Later in the inning CF Casey Hughston lined a two RBI single to put the Black Bears out in front 4-0 after an inning of play.
The Black Bears got back on the board in the second inning after Tolman hit a one-out triple to left field and then later scored on a ground ball hit to shortstop by Kelley. West Virginia added on an insurance run in both the sixth and seventh innings to carry a 7-0 lead. The Scrappers crossed two runs in the ninth inning on an RBI single but that was all the offense they would get as West Virginia would hang on to secure the 7-2 win.
Hughston was the hottest hitter in the West Virginia lineup tonight after finishing 2-for-3 with two RBI, a run scored and a walk. Tolman also had a good night at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored.
SP Jonathan Brubaker picked up the win (5-4) after he tossed 6.0 lights out innings, scattering only two hits and striking out three. RP Stephan Meyer had a good outing in his return to the Black Bears bullpen, pitching 2.0 scoreless innings. RP Sean Keselica pitched the final inning for the Black Bears to secure the win.
West Virginia and Mahoning Valley will continue the series on Friday, August 28 with a scheduled first pitch of 7:05 p.m. P Dario Agrazal will be on the mound as he looks for his sixth win this season.
