Auburn Doubledays News Release
STATE COLLEGE, PA - The Doubledays defeated the State College Spikes Thursday night 3-1 after five brilliant perfect innings from Matthew Crownover. Auburn struck early and never looked back to take game one of the series.
In the top of the first, the Doubledays quickly got on the board. Victor Robles and Max Schrock led off with back-to-back singles. After Kelvin Gutierrez struck out, Rhett Wiseman moved them both over with a groundout to first. Anderson Franco dug in next and doubled into right to score Robles and Schrock and give the Doubledays an early 2-0 lead.
The Doubledays added their third and final run in the next inning. Ian Sagdal led off with a walk and moved to third on a single by Randy Encarnacion. Sagdal then walked home from third when Dailyn Martinez committed his third balk of the night. Martinez's three balks gave him six on the season, which is the most in the New York-Penn League.
After that point, both teams' pitchers dominated. Matthew Crownover got the start for Auburn and was perfect in his five innings of work. The lefty's line was 5 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, and 4 K's en route to earning his first professional victory. Crownover threw just 59 pitches, 44 of which were strikes, and only reached one three-ball count. Crownover was in a full count against Ronnierd Garcia with two outs in the ninth before he forced Garcia to fly out to right to end his perfect night.
Adam Boghosian replaced Crownover in the sixth and immediately ended the perfect game when he walked Jose Godoy to start the inning. The righty then gave up a single to RJ Dennard to end the no-hitter. Two batters later with Godoy on second and Dennard on first, Anderson Franco committed the only error of the game at third and the ball carried into left, which allowed Godoy. That run put the score at 3-1 and neither team scored after that.
Dailyn Martinez, Max Alomnte, and Kender Villegas, were the three pitchers for State College, and the trio ended up retiring the final 16 Doubledays of the game. With two outs in the fourth, Jorge Tillero singled into center and was the last Doubleday to reach base in the ballgame.
In the seventh, Luis Torres replaced Adam Boghosian on the mound and worked three perfect 1-2-3 innings to record his third save of the season with the following line: 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, and 3 K's. In total, 13 of the 18 half innings went 1-2-3.
Daily Martinez committed three balks and dropped to 3-5 on the season with the following line: L, 7 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, and 6 K's.
The Doubledays look to win their third straight Friday night at 7:05 PM. Taylor Hearn (1-5, 3.97 ERA) starts for Auburn on Friday against Juan Perez (4-2, 3.10 ERA) for State College.
