Verlander Dominates, But Hens Fall to Clippers
June 6, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Toledo Mud Hens News Release
It was a tough night on the field for the Mud Hens as they lost 6-1 to the Columbus Clippers, but Saturday night's game will hardly be remembered for the loss. In front of 13,300 fans, the biggest crowd in the history of Fifth Third Field, Detroit Tigers' ace Justin Verlander made his second rehab start of the season. Wearing a Jurrasic Park themed jersey on PreHenstoric Night at the Hen House, Verlander was vintage Verlander, dominating his way through the Columbus lineup.
Verlander took the mound to loud applause as Rexy the T-Rex delivered the game ball to him. The first batter he faced of the day, Francisco Lindor, pulled a single to right field, but Verlander responded well. He struck out the next hitter in Michael Martinez, and then induced a strike-him-out-throw-him-out to end the first inning. In the second, Verlander ended the inning with a strike out of Giovanny Urshela, and then ended the third with a strikeout of Adam Moore. With two outs in the fourth, Jesus Aguilar double to left field, but Verlander ended the threat by striking out Zach Walters.
The offense of the Hens perked up early, with Dixon Machado lacing a double to left-center field with one out. A batter later, Mike Hessman put Toledo up 1-0 nothing with a single off the left field wall. However, the bats went quiet the rest of the game.
In the fifth inning, Verlander again ended the inning with a strikeout, making it five straight innings capped off with a strikeout. To start the sixth inning, Moore hit a ground ball to third base, but an error by Jefry Marte allowed him to reach. Verlander then got the next two outs, but was very close to reaching his pitch count limit of 90. Hens' manager Larry Parrish made his way to the mound to remove him from the game, but Verlander talked his way into staying in for another batter. The next hitter he faced, Aguilar, hit an RBI double to tie the game 1-1, ending Verlander's day, but overall he looked dominant. Leaving the mound, Verlander gave a hat tip to the crowd giving him a standing ovation. In his five and two thirds innings of work, he struck out 9 Columbus hitters and allowed only four hits.
In the eighth inning, the Clippers' offense poured it on, scoring five runs off of Bruce Rondon and Jose Valdez. It was a tough loss for the Hens, but it was a great night at the Hen House. The Mud Hens are back in action tomorrow at 6 p.m. against the Clippers for the rubber match of the three game series.
