SWB Game Notes

June 6, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release

EXPLOSIVE EXTRAS: An eight-run 11th inning carried the RailRiders over the Syracuse Chiefs (Washington Nationals) on Friday night, 10-2. SWB won its ninth straight road game while Syracuse (17-38) fell for the 12th time in a row and 19th time in 20 games overall.

EXTRA, EXTRA: The RailRiders improved to a league-best 5-0 in extra-inning games. The squad has outscored its foes 15-0 after ninth-inning play. SWB has not lost an extra-inning game since a 3-2 setback at Lehigh Valley in 11 innings on Aug. 30, 2014. Outfielder Taylor Dugas gave up the decisive score for the loss.

INHERITANCE TAX: While he blew a save, Tyler Webb (2-3) stranded two of his three inherited runners en route to the win. Only three of his team-high 17 hand-me-down men have crossed the plate this season.

LORD I WAS BORN A GAMELING MAN: Ben Gamel logged a team-high three hits and fell a triple shy of the cycle. He also picked up his fourth outfield assist when he forced extras by nailing Caleb Ramsey at the plate to end the ninth.

CAREER DAY: In his second career Triple-A start, Luis Severino tossed a career-best seven innings. He retired 20 of the last 23 he faced and allowed just four hits, all singles including two that made contact with an infielder's glove.

ROAD WARRIORS: The RailRiders have won nine straight games away from PNC Field going back to their four-game sweep of Durham from May 14-17. The team enjoys its longest road winning streak since the 2009 unit claimed its first 10 away from PNC Field. The 10th triumph in that spurt was a 17-14 game that took 13 innings and 4:43 at Rochester on April 25.

THE AIR UP THERE: The RailRiders stand four games above .500 for the first time since the 2013 squad was 20-16 after a 3-2 loss at Gwinnett on May 13.

GROSS DOMESTIC PRODUCT: The RailRiders stand five games below .500 at PNC Field (14-19) and nine games over on the road (16-7). The team has hit .282 on the road compared to a .246 mark at home. On the road, SWB has scored 125 runs in 23 games (5.4/game). At home, the squad has plated 111 runs in 33 games (3.4/game). The pitching has performed better at home (3.39 ERA) than outside of Moosic (3.59). No IL team has a better road winning percentage than the RailRiders (.696) and no IL squad has more home losses than SWB (19).

GETTING THE CALL: Former SWB hurler Pat Venditte tossed two scoreless innings in his MLB debut with the Oakland Athletics yesterday. The switch-pitcher dominated with Triple-A Nashville (17G/1GS, 1-0, 1.36, 33IP, 33K, 19H, .167 BAA, 12IR/4S). He became the bigs' first regular ambidextrous hurler since 1894. Montreal's Greg Harris was the last to throw with both arms in the majors. He did so in 1995 but he was a right-hander who only attempted life as a southpaw late in his career.

RED WINGING IT: The RailRiders have lost 10 of their last 11 games at Rochester's home, Frontier Field. That hurt the team en route to a 5-11 performance against the Red Wings last season. The SWB franchise had not logged a losing season against Rochester since the 2007 unit also went 5-11. The RailRiders have lost 17 of their last 22 against the Red Wings going back to 2013.

OFF THE RAILS: The RailRiders' eight-run eighth made for the most explosive inning for the franchise since the RailRiders rebrand in 2013...The eight-run margin tied as SWB's most lopsided win of the year...Each game at Syracuse last series was decided by the same score.
