Syracuse Mets News Release
Syracuse, NY (June 6, 2015) - The Syracuse Chiefs defeated the Pawtucket Red Sox 11-4 on Saturday night at NBT Bank Stadium. Syracuse notched 11 hits and all nine hitters in the starting lineup reached base against PawSox pitching on way to the Chiefs' first win in 13 tries.
Pawtucket (27-29) got on the board first in the top of the third inning against Syracuse starter P.J. Walters. Mike Miller hit his first Triple-A home run just inside the foul pole down the left-field line. The solo shot gave the Red Sox an early 1-0 lead.
Syracuse (18-38) answered immediately with a seven-run spot in the bottom of the third against Jess Todd. The first three batters in the inning reached base without swinging the bat. Cutter Dykstra walked, Darin Mastroianni was hit by a pitch and Tony Gwynn Jr. walked to load the bases with no outs. Emmanuel Burriss evened the score with an RBI groundout to the second baseman Deven Marrero. Mario Lisson followed with an RBI fielder's choice to the third baseman Travis Shaw, who tried to throw out Mastroianni at the plate unsuccessfully. With runners on the corners, Matt den Dekker laced a single to right field to plate the third Chiefs run in the inning. Then, Jason Martinson hit a single to load the bases for Syracuse again with one out. Josh Johnson stepped up next and hit a sacrifice fly to center field to increase the lead to 4-1. With runners on first and second, Steve Lerud lined a double to left-center field to plate two more runs. Mastroianni capped off the seven-run frame with an RBI single to increase the advantage to 7-1 after three.
The Red Sox used the long ball again to crawl back into the game in the top of the fourth. With two outs in the frame, Allen Craig reached first on a single to right field. The next batter, Bryce Brentz, homered over the left-center field fence to lower the Syracuse lead to 7-3.
Another home run by Pawtucket inched the Red Sox one step closer to Syracuse in the top of the fifth. Garin Cecchini led off the inning with a solo home run over the left-field fence. The third home run of the game for the Red Sox dropped the deficit to 7-4.
However, Syracuse silenced Pawtucket with runs in three consecutive innings. The Chiefs tacked on two in the bottom of the fifth inning against Dalier Hinojosa and Robbie Ross Jr. After Hinojosa fanned the first two hitters in the frame, he allowed a walk to Dykstra and a bunt single to Mastroianni. Then, Ross Jr. came in to replace Hinojosa. On a 3-2 pitch with two outs, Gwynn Jr. dunked a base hit in the right-field corner to score two more runs and give Syracuse a 9-4 lead.
The Chiefs added another in the bottom of the sixth. Lisson led off the inning with a walk against Ross Jr. Two batters later, Martinson hit his second single to right field to put runners on the corners with one out. Johnson drove in his second run of the game with his second sacrifice fly to increase the Chiefs' advantage to 10-4.
Syracuse scored one more time in the bottom of the seventh inning. With one out, Mastroianni laced a double into right-center field. Two batters later, Burriss drove in the 11th Chiefs run with a single to center.
Walters was great in his first start for Syracuse. In seven innings, the right-hander surrendered four runs on four hits with ten strikeouts in his Chiefs debut, a season high for a Chiefs starter. Rafael Martin closed out the winning with two perfect innings of relief.
Syracuse looks to sweep the two-game series against Pawtucket on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. The Chiefs send Doug Fister to the hill tomorrow in a rehab start. The PawSox will throw right-hander Keith Couch against Fister.
