RailRiders Edge Wings 2-1
June 6, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Rochester Red Wings News Release
The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders edged the Red Wings 2-1 Saturday night at Frontier Field. The win moved the RailRiders to within a half-game of the first place Red Wings.
The teams conclude the two-game set with a 1:35 p.m. Sunday game, a Knot Hole Gang Kids' Club game and kids can run the bases with Spikes and Mittsy after the game. Complete promotion details below...
The series featured the first place Wings and the second place RailRiders, with an equally interesting statistical subplot: The Wings had the league's best home winning percentage entering play Saturday (16-8, .667), while Scranton had the league's best road record at 16-7 - with nine straight wins on the road. Add in the fact that the Wings had defeated Scranton in 10 of the last 11 games between the clubs in Rochester, and the stage was set for the evening.
The RailRiders picked up a first inning run off Rochester starter Tyler Duffey, with Mason Williams scoring on a double play to make it 1-0 Scranton.
Big league veteran Kyle Davies started for Scranton Saturday, his 10th appearance for the RailRiders after being sent down by the Yankees April 15. Davies fanned a pair in the bottom of the first inning, sandwiched around a single by Oswaldo Arcia.
In the bottom of the second, Doug Bernier extended his hitting streak to 11 games with two outs. After a base hit by Ryan Wheeler that moved Bernier to second, Eric Farris drove in his 12th run of the season that tied the score, 1-1.
Duffey was solid after the first inning. He struck out the side in the second inning, and by the end of the fourth had set down nine of 10 batters - racking up seven strikeouts. Duffey was aided by a long running catch by left fielder Farris, who took away an extra base hit from Rob Refsnyder in the fourth.
After a leadoff three-base hit by Ben Gamel in the top of the fifth, Nick Noonan gave Scranton a 2-1 lead with a base hit. Duffey was lifted with one out and a runner at first in the top of the sixth inning, with Logan Darnell coming out of the bullpen to get a double play grounder. Duffey (0-3) worked 5 1/3 innings and allowed seven hits, two earned runs and a walk. He struck out nine and threw 104 pitches, 66 for strikes.
Davies made his exit in the bottom of the sixth, also with one out and a runner at first. Matt Tracy relieved Davies and struck out Danny Ortiz and Bernier to end the inning.
Davies (4-3) also went 5 1/3 innings with five hits, one earned run and one walk allowed. Davies fanned three and threw 99 pitches, 59 for strikes.
Mark Hamburger started the eighth inning on the mound, after Darnell worked 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Hamburger got two quick outs, then issued a walk - which prompted a pitching change with Ryan O'Rourke coming into the game. O'Rourke struck out Gamel to strand the runner and end the threat.
Kennys Vargas beat out an infield hit off relief pitcher Matt Tracy in the bottom of the eighth, and the RailRiders replaced Tracy with Nick Rumbelow. The Wings stranded the potential tying run, as Rumbelow got two fly outs and a strikeout.
O'Rourke struck out the first batter he faced in the ninth, then Michael Tonkin took over on the mound for Rochester.
NOTES: Doug Bernier's 11-game hit streak is his longest since an 11-game streak July 20-30, 2014....Tyler Duffey's nine strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings was impressive, but not his season high. Duffey struck out 10 batters in 6 2/3 innings April 9 for Double-A Chattanooga, and 12 in 7 innings in his last Double-A start May 17.
