Varnell heads to disabled list

Fort Wayne, IN - The Fort Wayne Wizards, in conjunction with the San Diego Padres, announced their first player movement of the 2007 season. Right-hander Grant Varnell was placed on the disabled list with a strained oblique and right-hander Stephen Faris has been promoted to Fort Wayne from the Padres' extended spring training camp in Peoria, Arizona.

Varnell is currently 0-1 with a 1.64 earned run average in eight relief appearances. In 11 innings of work out of the bullpen, he has allowed eight hits, a pair of walks and struck out six.

Faris was San Diego's 12th round selection in the 2006 June Amateur Draft out of the University of Clemson. He spent the entire season last year with the Eugene Emeralds of the Northwest League, going 2-1 with a 4.65 ERA in 11 games, including seven starts. In 40 2/3 innings pitched, he allowed 49 hits, 10 walks and struck out 23.
