Dayton Dragons News Release
Grand Chute, WI - A wise man once said that all good things must come to an end. Such was the case Thursday night, as Dayton Dragons (19-4) starting pitcher Daryl Thompson (WP, 5-0) finally gave up a run, ending a streak of 22.2 scoreless innings pitched. Despite one streak ending, the Dragons win streak stretched to six as they defeated the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (4-19) by the score of 5-2 to sweep the four game series at Fox Cities Stadium.
Thompson had not given up a run since the fourth inning on April 9th against the South Bend Silver Hawks. After giving up a leadoff home run in that inning, Thompson got the final six outs to start the scoreless streak. He then threw 6.0 scoreless innings in each of his next three outings to run the streak to 20.0 innings heading into tonight's game. It wasn't until an Ogui Diaz double with two outs in the third inning that the streak finally came to a close. Thompson falls just 0.2 innings shy of the Dragons record for consecutive scoreless innings held by Carlos Fisher, who tossed 23.1 straight scoreless innings in 2006.
After giving up another run in the fourth inning, it appeared as if Thompson might be headed for his first loss of the season. However, the Dragons picked up their teammate with two runs in the sixth inning, getting Thompson off the hook and putting him in position to earn his fifth victory of the year.
Chris Valaika had two RBIs, while Juan Francisco and Tony Esquer each added one. Drew Stubbs scored two runs, and has now scored a run the last nine times he has reached base. Dayton also picked up two more unearned runs on the night. Of the 28 runs scored by the Dragons in the series, 14 were charged as unearned.
After just 5.0 innings, Thompson turned the game over to his teammates in the bullpen. Misael DeJesus (ND) shut down the 'Rattlers for 2.1 innings, and Jose Rojas (SV, 6) got the final five outs to earn the save.
Dayton returns home Friday night to open up an eight game home stand, starting with four against the Kane County Cougars. Friday's first pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM with RHP Rafael Gonzalez (4-0, 1.54 ERA) getting the starting nod for the Dragons and RHP Craig Italiano (0-2, 14.09 ERA) on the hill for the Cougars. 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM will broadcast the game live, beginning with the Dragons Pre Game Show at 6:30 PM. Friday's game will also be televised live on Dragons TV, Time Warner Cable Channel 25. Former Detroit Tigers pitcher Fred Scherman will join Mike Vander Wood with the call of the action. All Dragons games in 2007 can also be heard on the internet via All In Broadcasting at www.daytondragons.com.
