Kane County Cougars News Release
Geneva, IL - The Kane County Cougars wrapped up an eight-game homestand Thursday afternoon, losing 9-3 to the West Michigan Whitecaps in front of a season-high 8,197 fans at Elfstrom Stadium.
The Whitecaps scored four times in the first inning against Cougars starter Scott Deal, and the Cougars answered with two against Jonah Nickerson in the bottom half. After Mike Affronti and Jermaine Mitchell walked, Greg Dowling cranked a two-run double to cut the deficit to 4-2.
Deal (1-2) settled down to retire 11 of the next 12 batters heading to the fifth but gave up another pair in that inning and left afterward. He allowed six runs on nine hits, walked none and fanned three in the loss. The Cougars' final run of the day came in the last of the fifth when Christian Vitters scored on a wild pitch from Nickerson (2-2), who picked up the victory. Joe Piekarz gave up the Whitecaps' final three runs.
The Cougars (5-19) start an 11-game road trip Friday night at 6 CDT in Dayton, Ohio, against the Dragons. Craig Italiano (0-2, 14.09) is scheduled to face Rafael Gonzalez (4-0, 1.54) in Game 1.
