Burlington Bees News Release
Burlington, IA (May 3, 2007) - For the second straight day, the Burlington Bees (12-13) shutout the Lansing Lugnuts (15-8) on three hits to earn a split of this four-game series. Today, Joe Dickerson led the offense with three hits in a 4-0 win in a special day game at Community Field. The Bees have now pitched six shutouts this season to lead the league.
Josh Cribb (1-1) started and worked five innings for the win. All three of the Lugnuts hits against him were doubles, but all came in separate innings. He allowed two walks, hit a batter, and struck out one. Jason Godin finished the final four innings, allowed just one baserunner, and struck out five to earn his first career save. The walk was issued to Brian Pettway with two outs in the sixth before Godin retired the last ten in a row.
Lansing starter Zach Dials (2-1) worked five innings and was the victim of some shaky defense. In the second inning, Kurt Mertins lined a single into left-center field that was misplayed by Yuber Rodriguez for his second error of the game allowing Mertins to advance to second. Rodriguez had done the same thing on a base hit by Alvi Morel to leadoff the first. After a lineout and a groundout, Mertins was at third, and O.D. Gonzalez hit a ground ball in the hole on the left side of the infield that went off the glove of a ranging Sean Shoffit at third for an infield hit and an RBI as Mertins scored the game's first run. The run was unearned as a flyout ended the inning. The Bees added another run in the third. With two outs, Dickerson singled, went to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a double by Michael Thompson. In the fourth inning, Brady Everett hit a ground ball to third and Shoffit threw the ball away for a two-base error. Two batters later, Gonzalez ripped a line drive double to left that brought Everett in to score for a 3-0 Bees' lead and a second unearned run against Dials, who came out after five.
The Bees added their final run against reliever Julio Pinto in the seventh. Morel led off with a double to right and with one out, Dickerson hit a slow roller to third. Shoffit's attempt at a great play backfired as Dickerson reached on an infield hit and when the throw bounced away, Morel was able to score. Pinto would work out of the inning with a strikeout and a groundout to make the run against him unearned also.
