Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

TRAVERSE CITY, MI - Jose Vargas became just the second player in Frontier League history to drive in 100 runs in a season as the Traverse City Beach Bums topped the Frontier League Road Warriors 8-1.

After the Road Warriors scored a run in the top of the second inning on a groundout by Cody Coffman to plate Doug Thennis, the Beach Bums offense went to work in the bottom of the frame. Walks to Sean Gusrang, Marcus Nidiffer and Ryan Still loaded the bases for Brian Heere who also drew a walk to force in Gusrang and tie the game at 1-1. That brought Vargas to the plate who singled through the left side, driving in Nidiffer and Still for his historic RBI total.

In the third, Traverse City added to the lead as a double by Gusrang and a single by Nidiffer with two out made it 4-1. Another two out rally produced three runs in the fourth. Chase Burch singled followed by a Jeff Flagg double to bring home Burch for a 5-1 lead. Two wild pitched sent Flagg home to make it 6-1. Kyle Colligan kept the inning going with a double. Gusrang followed with a single to plate Colligan, pushing the lead to 7-1. TC would tack on an eighth run in the fifth when Burch singled home Heere to cap the scoring.

For the second straight night, Traverse City got a strong pitching performance, this time from Jacob Clem. Clem (7-4) went six innings allowing one run on three hits. Mike Devine came on and pitched the final three innings for his second save.
