(EVANSVILLE, INDIANA) - The Evansville Otters brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth inning, before losing to the Florence Freedom 4-2 on Saturday night. The victory clinched the first ever playoff berth for the Florence Freedom in their 10 year existence.
Evansville had the initial lead in the game when outfielder Matt Sheely hit a solo home run in the third inning. The home run was the fourth this season for Sheely.
Down by a run, Florence rallied back to tie and take the lead in the next inning. Otters starter Bryce Morrow took a no-hitter in to the fourth, but he hit shortstop Junior Arrojo and allowed a single to outfielder Peter Fatse. With two men on base, designated hitter Eddie Rodriguez hit a fly ball to right field that got over the head of outfielder DeAngelo Mack. Both runs scored as Evansville fell behind 2-1.
Florence added another run in the eighth and a final run in the ninth inning for a 4-1 lead.
Evansville surged back again in the bottom half. Sheely reached on a bunt single and scored a few batters later on an RBI double from infielder Luis Parache. Representing the tying run, Nick Schwaner then hit a tailing fly ball to left field that nearly fell for a hit. Outfielder David Harris raced in to catch the ball at his waist and secure the 4-2 win for the Freedom. Florence improves to 56-39 with the win as Evansville falls to 45-49.
Freedom starter Brad Allen (4-1) earns the victory, after allowing one run on three hits in 8.0 innings. Morrow (8-8) pitched well, surrendering just two runs in 7.0 innings. Reliever Jorge Marban secured his 16th save.
The Evansville Otters will finish their regular season on Sunday with a 6:05 p.m. CDT first pitch at Historic Bosse Field. Evansville native and left-hander Adam Champion (8-4, 2.44 ERA) will start for the Otters against Florence righty Brandon Mathes (4-0, 3.61).
