ValleyCats Fall to Conclude Opening Road Trip

POMONA, NY - The Tri-City ValleyCats (1-0) could not use another early-game lead to break off their road losing skid, falling at the New York Boulders (4-3), 9-3, on Thursday evening at Palisades Credit Union Park.

The 'Cats suffered their fifth straight loss and fell victim to a series sweep in the three-game mid-week tilt, while wrapping up a span of six road games over seven days. The contest started on an optimistic note for the visitors, with second baseman Steven Figueroa using the second pitch of the night to launch a solo home run for a 1-0 Tri-City lead.

The advantage did not last long, however, with the Boulders plating three runs in the home half of the frame off a pair of RBI singles. ValleyCats starter Carlos Canelon (0-1) took the loss in his debut on the mound, surrendering five earned runs off as many hits with three strikeouts and four balls over three innings.

The teams traded runs in the second inning of play, with centerfielder Avery Tuck sending in third baseman Juan Silverio on an RBI single and New York collecting an RBI single of its own. The Boulders distanced themselves further with a 5-2 lead in the bottom of the third via an RBI single to right.

The 'Cats would find home plate once more in their second Thursday tilt of the year, with designated hitter Denis Phipps lacing an RBI double to plate right fielder Carson Maxwell in the top of the fifth. Right-handed reliever Donnie Speranza also toed the rubber for the first time this season, allowing four earned runs on two hits with a strikeout and eight walks in five innings. New York ended the night offensively by sending home two runs apiece in the seventh and eighth innings. Right-hander Zach Schneider (1-0) collected the win in relief fashion, striking out four and walking one in four shutout innings.

After beginning the 2021 season and its Frontier League tenure with a six-game road trip, the Tri-City ValleyCats are set to take the field at home for the first time since September 2019, Friday evening. First pitch at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium is set for 7:00 PM against the New Jersey Jackals, with postgame fireworks presented by Price Chopper & Market 32. Click Here for tickets.
