
Unbeaten Streak Comes To An End In 7-0 Loss To Checkers

Charlotte, NC -The South Carolina Stingrays (9-3-1-3) saw their nine-game unbeaten streak come to an end in a 7-0 loss to the Charlotte Checkers (7-3-1-1) in front of 3,969 at Time Warner Cable Arena Wednesday night. Checkers forward Tyler Doig picked up five points (1g, 4a) and Miika Wiikman recorded his first shutout knocking away 36 Stingrays shots. The Stingrays return home Friday night to take on the Gwinnett Gladiators at 7:05 p.m. at North Charleston Coliseum.
The Checkers first lit the lamp at 9:10 of the opening period as Michel Leveille sent a wrist shot past Stingrays goaltender Todd Ford. Checkers forward Doig and defenseman Steve Ward registered assists. Checkers winger Kenny Roche continued the scoring with a power-play goal at 16:33 from Leveille and Doig. Less than 30 seconds later, Checkers forward Andrew Carroll tallied his fifth of the season to give the Checkers a 3-0 lead. Jean-Philipp Chabot and Mike Taylor recorded assists.
Charlotte started the second period scoring just 19 seconds in as Roche found the twine for his second of the game and fourth of the season. Roche was unassisted on the play. The Stingrays ran into penalty trouble in the second period and the Checkers capitalized with two power-play goals for a commanding 6-0 lead at the end of 40 minutes. Doig tallied the first power-play maker at 7:55 from Julien Brouillette and Leveille. Checker forward Devin DiDiomete continued the special teams at 9:14 for his first of the year from Daniel Tkaczuk. Charlotte finished the game 3-for-7 on the man advantage. The Stingrays fell 0-for-4 on the power play.
The Checkers added one final goal in the third period at 6:04 as Tkaczuk beat a sprawling Ford for his first of the year from Doig. Ford finished the game knocking away 23 of 30 Checkers shots while Wiikman earns his first shutout of the season blocking all 36 Stingrays opportunities.
The Rays return to North Charleston Coliseum Friday, November 20 against the Gwinnett Gladiators at 7:05 p.m. for 100.9 WAY FM Family Fun Friday and $2 Beer Night! The Stingrays also host Gwinnett on Saturday, November 21 for Salute to Hometown Heroes Night featuring a pre-game hockey game between the Charleston Fire Dept. and the Atlanta Fire Dept. $2 of every ticket will go to the Equipping Our Heroes Foundation.
Saturday is also Tailgate Saturday! Bring the food, bring the music, and bring the FUN! Parking lots open at 4 p.m.! The Stingrays Booster Club will have tailgate party and will set up in parking lot A toward the middle just past the handicapped spaces. They will have plates for $5.00 - hamburger and chips or two hotdogs and chips as well as canned drinks and water for $.50.
On Sunday, November 22, the Stingrays battle the Johnstown Chiefs in their only visit to North Charleston Coliseum for the 2009-2010 season. Sunday is also the first Kid's Carnival of the season featuring $5 kid's tickets! Come join the fun starting at 2:30 p.m. on the Montague side of the Coliseum in the plaza. Camp Bow Wow will be on the main concourse for our first Adopt-a-Dog Sunday! Stop by and visit the Adoptable Dog of the Night! Tri-County Family Ministries will host a canned food drive at the Kid's Carnival and at all entrances to the Coliseum. Please bring non-perishable food items to support a great cause!
