Johnstown Chiefs News Release

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - The Johnstown Chiefs announced today that they have acquired defenseman Michael Couch, in exchange for future considerations, in a trade with the Gwinnett Gladiators.

"Mike gives us another big and mobile defenseman in our corps. He might not put up a ton of points but he will be responsible and steady in our end of the ice, and make things difficult on opposing teams' forwards," said Chiefs vice president and general manager Bill Bredin.

A 6-4, 210-pound defenseman, Couch is in his fourth season of professional hockey. He began his pro career in 2006-07 with Torino in Italy before moving to the U.S. and the ECHL. For the past two seasons Couch played for the Mississippi Sea Wolves. In 2007-08 he posted his best numbers as a pro with 15 points (3G, 12A) and 108 penalty minutes. The next season Couch rejoined the Sea Wolves and got off to a fast start with six assists and 60 penalty minutes through 15 games. He suffered an injury, however, and missed the rest of the campaign. In 11 games with Gwinnett this season Couch has zero points and 18 penalty minutes.

The 26-year-old native of Hanna, Alberta had an extensive amateur career that spanned four seasons in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and two at the Canadian collegiate level. Between Halifax (2000 to 2003) and Rouyn Noranda (2003 to 2004) Couch played in 235 games while collecting 64 points (15G, 49A) and 431 penalty minutes. At St. Thomas University he netted 12 points (6G, 6A) and 24 penalty minutes in 55 games.

Couch will join up with the Chiefs in Charlotte for the start of their southern road trip on Friday.
