Reading Railroads Everblades 5-3

Estero, Fla - The Florida Everblades and the Reading Royals began a three-game series on Wednesday night at Germain Arena. This match-up is the first of five contests between the two clubs during the 2009-10 campaign. The Everblades put out a valiant effort, but came up short to the Royals losing the contest 5-3. Goaltender Barry Brust allowed four goals on 27 shots in two periods of action. Royals' right winger Oliver Labelle scored the game-winning goal and Daniel Steiner added a goal and two assists in the victory. Everblades defensemen Scott Hotham added three helpers in the loss.

The Royals capitalized on their second power play opportunity of the first period with a goal courtesy of defensemen Nick St. Pierre. Royals forwards Ben McLeod and Stefano Giliati assisted on the tally that put Reading up 1-0. Blades left winger Ryan Lang scored his third goal of the season and evened the score to 1-1. Steve McJannet and Mike Hoffman added assists, both scoring their first points of the season. While on a power play late in the first, Jacob Micflikier banged home a loose puck giving the Everblades the lead at 2-1. Goaltender Barry Brust stopped 18 shots during the first stanza, including a short-handed breakaway before the Blades scored their first goal.

Twelve seconds into the second stanza, the Royals evened the score at 2-2 after Ben Gordon scored his seventh goal of the season. Quickly after the Royals goal, Blades center Ross Carlson tallied his first goal of the season putting the Everblades back on top at 3-2. The Royals came marching back with two goals from Daniel Steiner and Olivier Labelle putting the Royals back on top 4-3. Three consecutive fights broke out over the course of the next five minutes, upping the pace of the game.

The final period began with goalie Chris Beckford-Tseu replacing Brust. The Royals extended their lead to two goals after defenseman Jared Ross' shot from the point made it 5-3 at 15:53. The rest of the period remained scoreless and the Everblades were unable to recover the two-point deficit.
