MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Memphis Redbirds starting pitcher Tyler Lyons has been named the Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Week for the June 1 - June 7 period.
Lyons went 2-0 with a league-leading 0.00 ERA (0er/13.0ip) and .136 average against (6-for-144) in a pair of starts last week against the Salt Lake Bees and Iowa Cubs. The 27-year-old's 13 strikeouts were good for second-most in the league, while his 0.54 WHIP ranked third in the circuit.
In his first outing last Monday, Lyons went the distance in game one of a doubleheader against Salt Lake, surrendering just three hits and striking out five in a seven-inning complete game shutout.
The start marked the second complete game of the season for the southpaw, previously recording all 27 outs against the Sacramento River Cats on May 21. Lyons is the Redbirds' all-time leader in complete games, going the distance seven times during his tenure in a Memphis uniform since 2012.
On Saturday, the left-hander tossed six innings of shutout ball against division rival Iowa, leading the Redbirds to their eighth consecutive win.
With his performance, Lyons has now been named as PCL Pitcher of the Week three times during his career. The left-hander first received the honor in 2013 when he went 1-0 while striking out a league-leading 19 batters over a pair of quality starts from July 1 - July 7. Lyons issued only three walks and limited hitters to a .083 average (4-for-48) over 15.0 innings.
Last year, Lyons was a recognized for his performances from July 26 - August 3. The southpaw went 2-0 with a 0.56 ERA (1er/16.0ip) and 11 strikeouts over a pair of complete games Omaha and Round. Lyons did not walk a batter and limited hitters to a .148 average against (8-for-54) over 16.0 innings.
With his third Pitcher of the Week performance, Lyons now boasts the most in Redbirds' history. Current teammate Tim Cooney (who took home the honor for the May 11 - 17 period), Shelby Miller, Brandon Dickson, Anthony Reyes, Clint Wiebl, Clint Sodowsky, and Braddy Raggio all were named Pitcher of the Week twice as Redbirds.
Overall for Memphis this season, Lyons is 5-2 with a 2.61 ERA (14er/48.1ip) and a team-leading 56 strikeouts, which rank fifth best in the PCL. Lyons currently paces the circuit with a 10.43 SO/9 ratio (56/48.1ip), is tied for first in complete games (2), and his 2.61 is seventh best in the league.
Lyons, a member of the St. Louis 40-man roster, was recalled by the Cardinals on May 5. Over his three starts with St. Louis in 2015, the left-hander went 0-0 with a 5.53 ERA (8er/13.0ip).
Lyons was drafted by the Cardinals in the ninth round of the 2014 First-Year Player draft and has appeared in 26 games for St. Louis since 2013.
