DES MOINES, Iowa - The Cubs were able to out-duel the Redbirds Monday night, downing Memphis 2-1 for their second straight victory.

Redbirds starter Zach Petrick continued his stellar string out outings, recording his fifth straight quality start, a feat the right-hander has accomplished in seven of his last eight games. Petrick tossed seven innings of two-hit baseball against the Cubs, allowing just one unearned run while not issuing a walk, retiring 15 of the last 16 batters he faced. Since May 2, the 25-year-old has compiled a 4-0 record with a 1.76 ERA (10er/51.0ip).

Defense was an issue for the Redbirds in the first inning, when the Cubs were able to plate the first run of the game as a result of pass ball from catcher Travis Tartamella and a fielding error from third baseman Ty Kelly.

Memphis was able to even the ballgame at one run a piece in the top of the seventh inning. Stephen Piscotty led off the frame with a single past third baseman Christian Villanueva. Piscotty would become the first runner in scoring position of the night for Memphis, moving to second base on a wild pitch to Dan Johnson. Xavier Scruggs would then drive home the only run of the night for the Redbirds, a line drive double to the left field corner.

Miguel Socolovich was in to relieve Petrick in the eighth inning, having yet to surrender a run in a Redbird uniform in 2015. That streak would come to an end at sixteen scoreless innings, when Socolovich would allow Rubi Silva to score on a Rafel Lopez base hit.

The Redbirds threatened in the ninth, with both Greg Garcia and Ty Kelly reaching base on walks. However, Brian Schlitter was able to shut the door for Iowa, earning the Cubs their second straight victory over the Redbirds.

Iowa and Memphis will conclude their four game series Tuesday afternoon from Principal Park, with Nick Greenwood (3-1, 8.25) getting the call for the Redbirds. The left-hander will be opposed by Iowa's Erick Jokisch (3-2, 3.66). First pitch for Tuesday's matinee is set for 1:08pm CT.
