Two Mavericks Named to Cal League All-Star Team
June 11, 2015 - California League (CalL1)
High Desert Mavericks News Release
ADELANTO, Calif. - The High Desert Mavericks, Advanced-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers, have two players, Alex Burg and Frank Lopez, who will be recognized as All-Stars on the California League roster for the 2015 California vs. Carolina League All-Star Game presented by WaBa Grill. The game is set for 7:35 p.m. at LoanMart Field on Tuesday, June 23 in Rancho Cucamonga, CA.
"Alex and Frank are bright stars in a very talented Texas Rangers minor league organization," said Ben Hemmen, Mavericks General Manager. "Fans should not miss an opportunity to watch them play with their teammates at Heritage Field. It is going to be an exciting summer."
Alex Burg will be representing the Mavericks as one of three catchers named to the team. He is tied for first on the Cal League leaderboard in home runs with starting All-Star Designated Hitter A.J. Reed, both with 15. Burg, a Washington-native who was named Cal-League "Player of the Week" on May 18, is leading the league in slugging percentage (.644), as well as best Home Run to At-Bat ratio with one homerun per every 11.60 at bats. He is also among the top 10 batters in the Cal League with a .310 batting average.
"I'm very proud and honored to represent the Texas Rangers and the High Desert Mavericks in this years All-Star game," said Burg. "There are so many great players in this league and to be chosen as one of them is an incredible feeling."
Frank Lopez, one of 13 All-Star pitchers named to the team, will not be participating due to his recent promotion to AA Frisco on May 22. Lopez, a Venezuela-native, who was signed as a non-drafted free agent in 2010, posted a 4-1 record and 2.95 ERA with 42.2 innings pitched and held opposing batters to a .226 average while at High Desert. The crafty Southpaw recently received Texas League "Pitcher of the Week" honors with Frisco on May 25 after he blanked San Antonio in his Double-A debut, with 6.1 innings of work, only allowing two hits and striking out five.
The All-Star teams are selected by votes of managers and coaching staffs, local media and front office executives. The California-Carolina League All-Star Game has been played annually since 1996. This will be the third time in the game's relatively short history that Rancho Cucamonga will host the mid-season event.
The Mavericks continue their homestand with a four-game set tonight (Thursday) at Heritage Field. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. PST, taking on the San Jose Giants, affiliate of the San Francisco Giants.
