Six San Jose Giants Named to 2015 California League All-Star Team

San Jose, CA- Six San Jose Giants players have been named to the California League All-Star team and will participate in the 2015 All-Star Game against the Carolina League All-Stars on June 23 in Rancho Cucamonga, California. RHP Tyler Beede, OF Hunter Cole, RHP Chase Johnson, RHP Keury Mella, RHP Dan Slania and INF Austin Slater were selected to represent the organization in the 19th All-Star contest between the California and Carolina Leagues. 26 players total from the California League were named to the All-Star squad and the Giants six players were the most of any team.

"I am incredibly proud of each of our six players that were selected to the All-Star team," said Russ Morman, San Jose Giants Manager. "I know every one of them is looking forward to having the opportunity to represent not only the San Jose Giants, but the entire San Francisco Giants organization on the 2015 California League All-Star team. Their selection is recognition of the all of the hard work they have put in this year."

Before being promoted to Double-A Richmond on June 4, Tyler Beede was the leader of a San Jose Giants pitching staff that currently boasts the second-best team ERA in the California League. In nine starts with San Jose, the San Francisco Giants 2014 First Round Pick went 2-2 with a 2.24 ERA. Over 52 1/3 innings, Beede struck out 37 and walked just nine. In his final start with San Jose on May 30, he struck out 11 over seven scoreless innings. Beede will not participate in the All-Star Game due to his promotion.

Keury Mella and Chase Johnson have been impressive on the hill as well for San Jose. Mella's 2.76 ERA currently ranks fifth in the California League, while Johnson is sixth with a 2.80 ERA. Mella currently leads the Giants in strikeouts (50) and has 1.03 ERA in his last five starts. Johnson is the team leader in innings pitched (54 2/3) and owns 48 strikeouts to just 16 walks.

Out of the bullpen, Dan Slania has been one of the best relievers in the California League during the first half of the season. The right-hander features a 1.88 ERA in 25 appearances and is currently second in the league with 10 saves. Slania has struck out 37 batters compared to just 6 walks in 28 2/3 innings.

Hunter Cole has enjoyed tremendous success since joining the San Jose Giants during the second week of the season. He ranks second in the California League with a .328 batting average and has multiple hits in 14 out of his last 26 games. He's posted monthly batting averages this season of .310 in April, .346 in May and .293 thus far in June. Cole also leads the Giants in triples (3) and on-base percentage (.392), is third in RBI's (26) and doubles (10).

Austin Slater has anchored a spot in the middle of the Giants lineup all season. He leads San Jose in doubles (13), is tied for first in hits (59), is second in RBIs (28) and is batting .285 overall. Slater hit .302 in April, before batting at a .311 clip in May. With runners in scoring position, the second baseman has hit a team leading .344.

The California-Carolina League All-Star Game will be taking place in California for the first time since the San Jose Giants hosted the contest in 2013 at Municipal Stadium. The California League won last year's game and the all-time series is tied at 8-8-2.
