Blaze Drop Finale 10-2 But Take Series

June 11, 2015 - California League (CalL1)
Bakersfield Blaze News Release

After winning the first two games of the short, three-game road trip to San Jose, the Bakersfield Blaze came out a bit flat in the finale, falling behind quickly 8-1 before ultimately dropping the closing game with the San Jose Giants, 10-2, on Wednesday afternoon by the Bay.

Looking for the rare road sweep, the Blaze got off to the wrong start. Tyler Pike (L, 0-3) could not escape the 2nd inning while surrendering six runs (five earned) on three hits and three walks over just 1.2 frames of work.

The bullpen did not fare a great deal better, as the Giants took out a few days of frustration in one contest. Rafael Pineda allowed another pair of runs (one earned), and Carlos Misell gave up two more (one earned), as well, though Nick Valenza had a nice bounce-back performance between the two righthanders, going three shutout frames to bring his ERA down to 5.22.

On the other side, the Blaze were largely held in check by Giants starter Jason Forjet (W, 2-1), who allowed two runs over his five innings of work, and the pen worked four scoreless frames to follow.

The series did provide an array of great positives for the Blaze, as Tyler O'Neill continued to slaughter San Jose pitching, homering twice in the three games to raise his season total to 13. Nelson Ward was slowed in the finale, but had two multi-hit games to begin the series and is batting over .400 during his first week as a Blaze. And though the Blaze allowed seven earned runs on Wednesday, the club did not give up a single earned run in the first two contests.

With a series win in the bank, the Blaze head home to begin a seven game homestand with the Nuts and 66ers. The series begins on a Thirsty Thursday, with gates opening at 6:45pm, and two hours of dollar beer to follow. First pitch is set for 7:45pm with Dylan Unsworth taking on Johendi Jiminian.

Later on the homestand, the Blaze are, for the first time ever, featuring a "Hottest Game of the Year" promotion. On Sunday, the first 500 fans will be welcome to the game for FREE just for braving the heat. Bring the sunscreen!
