2015 Cal League All-Stars Announced
June 11, 2015 - California League (CalL1) News Release
Oxnard, CA - The California League is proud to announce the 2015 All-Stars. The roster is made up of 23 active players with at least one representative being selected from each Cal League team.
The 2015 California/Carolina League All-Star Game will be played in Rancho Cucamonga, CA at LoanMart Field, the home of the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes. Baseball's top prospects, representing 18 Major League teams and 18 Minor League affiliates, will descend upon LoanMart Field on June 23 as two of the nation's elite Class-A Advanced leagues matchup in the 19th California-Carolina League All-Star Game. The California League will look to make it two in a row and break the tie in the all-time record. The record for the series is currently tied at 8-8-2.
Managing the team is Bill Haselman, the manager for the host team Quakes. Haselman is in his first season managing the Quakes but is a veteran in the Cal League winning a Cal League Championship as manager of the Inland Empire 66ers in 2013. The former 13 year MLB veteran (Rangers, Mariners, Red Sox, and Tigers) and former back up quarterback to Troy Aikman at UCLA will have his pitching coach, Bill Simas, hitting coach, Mike Eylward, and assistant coach, Rafael Ozuna. Simas is a former MLB pitcher for the White Sox. Eylward, a former Angels farmhand has been the hitting coach for the Quakes over the past 2 seasons. Ozuna played for the Dodgers organization in the 90's and has been a coach for the system for 4 seasons now. Also part of the staff is trainer, Jason Kirkman and Strength and Conditioning Coach, Lauren Green.
Highlighting the team is Lancaster JetHawks Outfielder, Brett Phillips who is among the top of the leader board in Minor League Baseball (MiLB). Phillips leads Minor League Baseball in Runs scored (54), he is 2nd in hits (77) and 3rd in extra base hits (33). Starting at First Base for the Cal League is Cody Bellinger from Rancho Cucamonga. The 19 year old is 4th in Runs scored (47) and is tied for extra base hits with Phillips. If Phillips and Bellinger get on base, Lancaster JetHawks First Baseman, A.J. Reed will likely drive them in. Reed is 2nd in MiLB HRs and RBIs with 15 and 52 respectively. Reed will be the starting Designated Hitter for the Cal League. Starting on the mound is Visalia Rawhide pitcher, Zack Godley. Zack has dominated Cal League hitters this year and is tied for 3rd in all of MiLB in Wins with 7 and is 7th in strike outs with 75. If the Cal League has a lead in the ninth inning, Haselman may give the ball to Lake Elsinore Storm closer, Eric Yardley. He is currently tied for 7th in MiLB in Saves with 11.
Voting for the All Star Team consists of each team submitting 3 ballots with at least 1 ballot coming from the Field Manager. The complete roster is below.
