Elmira Jackals News Release

The Elmira Jackals will return to First Arena after 19 days away from their home venue, as they host the Reading Royals on Saturday night and the Johnstown Chiefs on Sunday afternoon.

Prior to Saturday's home game, the Jackals wrap up their seven-game road trip on Friday evening in Reading.

The Jackals have not seen the Royals since Oct. 17, when the Jackals defeated the Royals in a shootout 6-5 at the Sovereign Center in Reading, Pa. This weekend, the Jackals have an opportunity to cut into the five-point lead the Royals hold over the Jackals for the top spot in the American East Division.

THE WEEK THAT WAS

The Jackals earned three points this weekend in comeback efforts at Johnstown and Toledo. On Friday night, the Jackals scored three consecutive goals to send their game with the Chiefs to overtime. The contest went to a shootout and the Jackals prevailed in the shootout 3-1, winning the game 5-4.

After a Saturday loss at the Toledo Walleye, the Jackals trailed the Walleye late in the third on Sunday night. At 17:03 of the third period, Josh Aspenlind scored the first goal of the game for the Jackals on a feed from Justin Donati, tying the game up 1-1. The Jackals wound up falling to the Walleye in a shootout, but did earn a point, ending the weekend at.500.

AWESOME PERFORMANCE IN NET

For the second straight Sunday contest, the Jackals signed their emergency backup goaltender to a contract to start the final game of the weekend. For the second straight Sunday, that goaltender played exceptionally well in his first start for the Jackals.

Tyler Sims made his 2009-2010 ECHL debut in net in the 2-1 shootout loss against the Walleye, stopping 36 of 37 shots as he helped the Jackals gain a point in the standings. Sims was spectacular in net, giving way only on a Walleye power-play rush, in which he made two initial saves before the second rebound was knocked past him.

On Friday night, Pier-Olivier Pelletier earned his first professional victory in the shootout win at Johnstown. Pelletier stopped 21 of 25 pucks in the winning effort.

IN THE COMMUNITY

Jackals players will visit the Glove House Christmas Party, where they will be visiting children.

On Thursday, the Jackals will visit St. Joseph's Hospital in Elmira to visit and talk with patients.

The Jackals have been active in the community all season, recently appearing at Wegmans and the Cohen Elementary School. This past weekend, Blade and the Jackals front office staff went bowling with foster children at Paramount Lanes in Elmira Heights and attended Hope of Christmas in downtown Elmira.
