Portland Beavers News Release
TUCSON, Ariz. - Alex Romero was 4-for-5 with an RBI and each Tucson starter recorded a hit as the Tucson Sidewinders defeated the Portland Beavers 7-4 at Tucson Electric Park Monday night.
Despite allowing seven hits and walking five over 6 2/3 innings, Enrique Gonzalez recorded his eighth victory of the season for the Sidewinders (73-62).
Royce Huffman, Adrian Burnside and Jon Schemmel each recorded two hits for the Beavers (56-81).
Ronnie Merrill and Romero each collected RBI singles in the bottom of the second inning off Portland starter Casey Fossum, giving the Sidewinders a 2-0 lead.
Fossum, making his second start for the Beavers, allowed four runs on 12 hits over five innings to pick up the loss.
Merril tripled with one out in the bottom of the fourth inning and Enrique Gonzalez drove him in to record his second RBI of the season. Paul McAnulty recorded his second outfield assist of the year, throwing out Romero at the plate to get the Beavers out of a bases loaded jam.
With a run already home in the bottom of the sixth, Burnside threw a wild pitch that allowed Romero to score from third base. A balk by Burnside and an error by Schemmel allowed another run in, bringing the Tucson lead to 7-0.
The Beavers avoided being shutout for the second time in three days after Brady Clark drove in Burnside from second base in the top of the seventh inning. Keoni Ruth and Schemmel also added RBIs in the frame.
Clark doubled to lead off the ninth inning and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Schemmel before Jailen Peguero struck out Luke Carlin to end the game.
The Beavers continue their series with Tucson, Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Tucson Electric Park.
NOTES: Right-handed pitcher Richie Daigle was transferred to Class A Lake Elsinore from Portland Monday ... Ray Chang left the game in the fourth inning after being hit by a pitch.
