Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS -- Right-hander John Van Benschoten allowed just three hits over 6.2 scoreless innings, while center fielder Rajai Davis went 2-for-4 with a two-run triple as Indianapolis defeated Buffalo, 2-1, Monday night at Victory Field.
The Indians improve to 29-20 overall and 13-10 at home, while the Bisons fall to 28-19 on the season and 17-10 on the road. Tuesday will be the Tribe's 43rd consecutive day atop the International League's West Division.
Van Benschoten (6.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 5 SO), who picks up his fifth win in his last six starts, is now 5-3 with a 2.56 ERA through 10 appearances. The performance was also his fourth quality start (6+ IP; no more than 3 ER) of the campaign.
Davis extended his season-best hitting streak to 15 games (.369 BA, 24-for-65, 11 R, 9 RBI) with a single in the third. He also brought LF Luis Matos and C Einar Diaz plateward on the Tribe's only extra-base hit of the night -- a two-run triple to right center -- in the fifth.
Buffalo was held scoreless until the eighth when CF Franklin Gutierrez (1-for-4, 1 R) scored on DH Sin-Soo Choo's (2-for-4, 1 RBI) single to left.
Choo and SS Luis Rivas registered two base knocks apiece for the Bisons.
Indianapolis LHP Juan Perez (1.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER) entered in the seventh and was relieved by RHP Brian Rogers (0.2 IP, 1 BB, 1 SO), who worked his way out of an eighth-inning jam.
Indians RHP Chris Hernandez (0.1 IP, 1 SO) came in with two outs in the ninth -- and the tying run at first -- but struck out Buffalo PH Trent Durrington to end the game and pick up his third save of 2007.
Bisons LHP Aaron Laffey (8.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 SO) suffered the loss, falling to 0-3 on the season.
The two teams return to Victory Field on Tuesday at 7 p.m., for game two of the four-game series. RHP Marty McLeary is expected to take the hill for Indianapolis, while RHP Jeff Harris is expected to start for Buffalo.
The contest will be carried by ESPN-950 AM and IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley. The pre-game show begins at 6:40 p.m.
