Rochester, NY - The Richmond Braves beat the Rochester Red Wings 3-0 Monday at Frontier Field. Lance Cormier pitched 6.2 shutout innings in his rehab assignment as the Braves won the first of a four game series.
The Braves generated all the offense needed with a run in the third on an RBI double by Yunel Escobar. Richmond tacked on two more runs in the fourth on an RBI single by Corky Miller and a run-scoring fielder's choice by Wes Timmons. Meanwhile Cormier allowed four hits and two walks while striking out four. He threw 81 pitches.
Cormier picked up the win. Will Startup struck out four in 1.1 innings. Blaine Boyer picked up a save. Jeremy Cummings took the loss. The shutout was the league leading eighth of the year for the Braves. Gregor Blanco had two hits for Richmond. Tommy Watkins had two hits for the Red Wings.
The Braves and Red Wings square off again Tuesday in Rochester at 7:05. Trey Hodges will pitch for Richmond against Nick Blackburn. The Braves return home June 5.
