Trenton's Comeback Falls Short

(Erie, PA)- Erie scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and went on to top Trenton 9-6 on Thursday night from Jerry Uht Park in Erie, PA. Erie has won the first three games of the series.

Down 2-0, Erie (43-36) scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning to tie the game. Third baseman Ron Bourquin had an RBI groundout to plate the first run, and Right fielder Brennan Boesch scored the second run on a wild pitch by Thunder Starting Pitcher Jason Johnson (0-2). The Sea Wolves took the lead in the third inning on a two-out RBI single by Designated hitter Andy Dirks. Erie opened the lead up to 8-2 with a five-run fourth inning. All the runs were scored with two outs. With two outs and Borquin at second base, Shortstop Cale Iorg struck out, but reached first base on a wild pitch. Catcher Alex Avila followed with a two-run double to make it 5-2. First baseman Ryan Strieby then hit a two-run home run to extend the lead to 7-2. Boesch capped off the scoring with a solo home run.

The Thunder would go on to score four straight runs to cut the gap to 8-6. Designated Hitter Jorge Vazquez connected on a three-run home run in the fifth inning off of Erie Starting Pitcher Jonah Nickerson (5-6). Vazquez went 4 x 5 with two runs, and three RBI in the loss. The four-hit game was his second of the season. Catcher Jesus Montero had a two-out RBI single in the seventh inning off of Erie Reliever Cody Satterwhite to bring Trenton within 8-6. Satterwhite pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings for his ninth save of the season. Three different Erie pitchers have recorded saves in the series. Erie scored an insurance run in the eighth inning on a wild pitch by Thunder Reliever Jose Valdez.

Trenton (38-40) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Montero and First Baseman Chris Malec hit back-to-back home runs off of Nickerson. Montero has hit four home runs so far in the series, and has hit home runs in his last four games. Last season, Former Thunder Outfielder Austin Jackson hit home runs in four straight games (6/13/08-6/17/08). Trenton has scored the first run in each of the three games in the series.

Johnson allowed 11 hits and eight runs in 3 2/3 innings to take the loss in his second start for the Thunder. Nickerson allowed 11 hits and five runs in 5 1/3 innings, but picked up the win for Erie. Trenton has dropped six straight games.

Trenton will look to salvage the final game of the four-game series on Friday night. Trenton's Starting Pitcher is TBD. RHP Thad Weber (1-0, 5.00) will start for Erie. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
