Trenton Rolls Past Portland 7-2 on Thursday Night

(Trenton, NJ)- Trenton starting pitcher Jason Jones tossed 7 solid innings, and picked up his Eastern League leading 6th win of the season, to lead Trenton to a 7-2 win over Portland on Thursday night at Waterfront Park. Trenton halted a three-game losing streak and now leads Portland by 1.5 games in the Northern Division Standings.

Trenton (25-15) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the 3rd inning off of Portland starting pitcher Justin Masterson (1-3). After infield hits by both 3B Chris Malec and 2B Kevin Russo, SS Ramiro Pena delivered an RBI single to make it 1-0. Later in the frame, CF Colin Curtis had a sacrifice fly RBI to increase the lead to 2-0. Pena had 3 RBI in the win and Malec had 3 hits and scored 3 runs. Portland (23-16) tallied a run in the 5th, but the Thunder responded with three runs of its own in the bottom of the 5th inning to extend the lead to 5-1. All three runs came with two outs, as the big hits in the inning were an RBI double by 2B Kevin Russo and a two-run double by LF Edwar Gonzalez. The Thunder scored two more runs in the 7th inning on a two-run triple by Pena.

Jones (6-0) scattered 7 H and gave up only 1 R in 7 IP. He struck out 3 and did not walk a batter. Masterson gave up 7 ER and 9 H in 6 IP to take the loss. Thunder reliever Mark Melancon pitched the final two innings and struck out 4 in his Thunder debut.

Trenton will start a three-game series on Friday night against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, the Double-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays, at Waterfront Park. LHP Chase Wright (5-1, 2.54) will start for Trenton against New Hampshire LHP A.J. Wideman (1-5, 7.36).
