Altoona Curve News Release

ALTOONA - The Altoona Curve split a doubleheader with the Akron Aeros on Thursday afternoon at Blair County Ballpark, dropping the first contest 3-0, but prevailing in the second game, 3-2, behind a strong pitching performance from Yoslan Herrera.

The doubleheader began as scheduled at 10:35 a.m. after members of the Curve Grounds Crew and front office staff worked throughout the night to get the field ready for play. The first two games of the series were postponed because of wet field conditions caused by an unexplained issue with the field's underground infrastructure.

In the second game of the twinbill, Herrera (3-3) tossed six solid innings and allowed just six hits to earn his second consecutive victory. The only run that Akron scored off the Curve right-hander was unearned in the top of the fifth inning.

Altoona used a three-run third inning to take command of the nightcap, scoring the trio of runs off Akron hurler J.D. Martin (3-2) with two outs. Melvin Dorta knocked in Brian Finegan for the first run of the game, then Jonel Pacheco quickly followed by hitting a two-run home run, his sixth of the year, which put Altoona up 3-0.

After Akron scored their unearned run in the fifth, Chris Hernandez allowed a solo home run to Armando Camacaro in the top of the seventh inning, but was able to hold the fort to secure his fourth save of the season.

In the first game of the afternoon, Akron used a steller pitching performance from southpaw David Huff to claim victory. Huff (3-3) allowed only three hits over seven shutout innings en route to a 3-0 Aeros win. Altoona only got one runner to scoring position against Huff and that came on Milver Reyes' double in the third inning.

Jimmy Barthmaier (2-2) was tagged with the loss after throwing 4 2/3 innings and allowing three runs over that span. The righty punched out six batters.

The Curve will hit the road for a seven-game road trip, which starts Friday evening in Harrisburg. Left-hander Kyle Bloom (0-3, 6.41) will get the start for Altoona, while the Senators will counter with southpaw Cory Van Allen (2-0, 0.71). Game time is set for 6:05 p.m. with radio coverage on flagship station WHPA-FM, 93.5 and the Curve Radio Network slated to begin at 5:50 p.m.
