Trenton Thunder News Release

(Trenton, NJ)- DH Matt Carson hit the go-ahead two-run home run in the 7th inning to lead Trenton to a 2-1 win over New Britain on Thursday Night at Waterfront Park in Trenton. The Thunder have now won three straight games, and four out of five against the Rock Cats.

Down 1-0 in 7th inning, New Britain (9-10) starting pitcher Johan Pino (0-1) retired the first two batters of the inning. But he allowed an infield single to Thunder LF Colin Curtis to extend the inning. That brought Carson to the plate, who belted the first pitch of the at-bat for a home run to left field to give the Thunder a 2-1 lead. Carson had two hits and extended his hitting streak to 11 games.

The Thunder bullpen held down the fort after Carson's home run. Thunder reliever Bo Hall came on with a runner on first base and no one out in the 8th inning and retired three in a row including two strikeouts. In the 9th inning, the first two Rock Cats reached against Thunder closer Eric Wordekemper. But Wordekemper retired New Britain pinch-hitter Trevor Plouffe on a sacrifice bunt and struck out RF Erik Lis for the second out. After a walk to SS Steve Tolleson to load the bases, 2B Felix Molina flied out to center field to end the game.

Trenton (13-9) starting pitcher George Kontos received a no-decision but had his best outing of the season. He went 6.1 IP and gave up 4 H and 1 ER. He struck out a season-high 6 and walked one. The only run he allowed was a solo home run to New Britain DH David Winfree in the second inning. Pino retired the first 12 batters of the game and ended up going 7 IP for the Rock Cats. He gave up 4 hits and 2 ER. Thunder reliever Zach Kroenke (1-0) earned the win going .2 IP and allowing 1 H and 0 runs.

The second game of the four-game series is on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. RHP Dan McCutchen (2-1) starts for Trenton against New Britain LHP Ryan Mullins (1-1).
