Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
Jonathon Niese tossed six shutout innings and Fernando Martinez scored a run and drove in another, helping the Binghamton Mets to a 2-0 win over the Portland Sea Dogs at Hadlock Field Thursday. The win snaps Binghamton's two-game losing streak.
The B-Mets' (10-11) bats were silent through the first five innings, as spot starter Kyle Jackson held the B-Mets to one hit over four before Miguel Asencio tossed a hitless fifth. Binghamton broke through against Asencio (1-1) in the sixth when Martinez singled, stole second and scored on Daniel Murphy's two-out single to right for a 1-0 B-Mets lead.
The first two B-Mets were retired to start the seventh before Ambiorix Concepcion walked and Rafael Arroyo and Martinez singled, the latter scoring Concepcion from second base with Binghamton's second run.
Niese (2-1) limited Portland (14-6) to five hits, striking out five. Salvador Aguilar followed with two scoreless innings before Eddie Kunz tossed a 1-2-3 ninth, striking out one, for his fourth save in as many chances.
Friday, the B-Mets play the second game of a four-game series against the Portland Sea Dogs. Jose Sanchez (2-1, 4.66) will start for Binghamton against Matt Goodson (1-0, 2.00) of Portland. The first pitch is slated for 6:00 p.m. at Hadlock Field with the radio broadcast beginning at 5:45 on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
Notes: Jackson got the spot start for Justin Masterson, who threw six innings of one-run ball in his Major League debut for the Red Sox this afternoon in a no-decision vs. the Angels...Niese is the first B-Mets starter to earn a win in 11 games (Jake Ruckle, 4/12 @ ERI) and he is the second B-Mets starter to pick up two wins, joining Jose Sanchez...the shutout is Binghamton's third, but first since 4/9 vs. AKR...Portland didn't have a single multi-hit inning...Concepcion teamed up with Emmanuel Garcia to throw out Jeff Corsaletti in the sixth when he tried to stretch a double into a triple, giving Ambiorix his third outfield assist in the last two games...Binghamton has won 14 of 19 at Hadlock Field since 2006.
