Trenton Holds Off Portland 10-6

(Portland, ME)- Trenton took advantage of four Portland errors, and scored 10 runs for the first time since August 4th, for a 10-6 win over Portland on Tuesday night from Hadlock Field. The Thunder, who have won four of its last five games, stayed within one game of New Britain for second place in the Northern Divison with six games to go in the regular season. New Britain defeated Reading on Tuesday night 2-0.

Down 1-0, Trenton (67-68) scored a two-out run in the second inning to tie the game at 1-1. Catcher P.J. Pilittere came through with an RBI double to score First baseman Chris Malec. The Thunder scored two runs in the third inning to take a 3-1 lead. Malec picked up a bases-load two-run single to give the Thunder a 3-1 lead. In the bottom of the third inning, Portland tightened the game with a sacrifice fly RBI by Center fielder Ryan Kalish. Trenton tallied three runs in the top of the fifth inning to extend the lead to 6-2. Trenton loaded the bases with no outs against Portland Starting Pitcher Ryne Lawson. Second baseman Matt Cusick singled, and moved to third base on a double by Shortstop Eduardo Nunez. After a walk to Malec, Designated Hitter Richie Robnett followed with a two-run single to make it 5-2. Trenton capped off the scoring in the inning on a fielder's choice RBI by Pilittere.

Leading 6-3 in the eighth inning, Trenton scored two more runs on an error by Second baseman Iggy Suarez. Suarez fielded a ground ball off the bat of Malec with the bases loaded, and made an errant throw to second base in an attempt to start a double-play. The throw went into left field which allowed Krum and Cusick to score. Trenton scored its final two runs in the top of the ninth inning. The fourth error of the game for the Sea Dogs, third by First baseman Lars Anderson, allowed a run to score. Cusick drove home the final run for Trenton on an RBI ground out. Cusick had his first three-hit game in the win for the Thunder, and also scored two runs. Nunez had two hits for the Thunder, and now has six multi-hit games in his last eight contests. Five Thunder players had multi-hit games in the win.

Trenton Starting Pitcher Lance Pendleton (1-2) tossed six innings and scattered six hits and two runs to pick up his first win for the Thunder. Trenton Relievers Kanekoa Texeira and Jose Valdez combined to toss the final three innings of the game. Valdez allowed five hits and three runs in the ninth inning. The Sea Dogs had five straight batters reach against Valdez with two outs in the ninth, until he retired Left fielder Daniel Nava on a fly out for the final out of the game. Lawson (3-12) allowed six runs (four earned) in 4 2/3 innings to take his second loss in three starts against the Thunder.

Trenton and Portland play the middle game of their three-game series on Wednesday night from Hadlock Field. RHP Josh Schmidt (8-3, 1.51) will start for Trenton against Portland RHP Blake Maxwell (5-8, 5.33). Game time is set for 6:00 p.m.
