Chesapeake Baysox News Release

BOWIE, Md. - First baseman Brandon Waring shined in his Baysox debut, smashing a double and a home run while driving in five as Bowie downed Binghamton 6-1. Right-hander Steve Johnson earned his second win, tossing 6.0 strong innings allowing only two hits. Four Baysox made their Double-A debut on the night, and the fresh blood was a kick-start after losing two games in walk-off fashion the night before in Reading.

"To lose the way we did last night was tough," Johnson said. "I went out there and threw the best I could and it was great to have some of new guys provide us with the run support."

The Baysox jumped out early with two runs in the first inning thanks to a pair of Binghamton defensive miscues. Center fielder Matt Angle walked to start the game against Jenrry Mejia, and an errant pickoff throw by the right-hander allowed him to advance to third with nobody out. One batter later, third baseman Josh Bell reached on catcher's interference to put runners at the corners with one out. Mejia struck out left fielder Eric Crozier looking, but Waring connected for a two-run double to give the Baysox a 2-0 advantage. Angle, Waring's roommate when the two were at Class A Frederick, started his Baysox career by going 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored on the night.

"I just try to do the same thing I always do which is see pitches and work counts," Angle said. "My job is to get on base and let the big guys behind me drive me in."

Angle led off the fifth inning with a single, advancing to second when shortstop Carlos Rojas reached on an error. Bell followed with an RBI single into center field, ending Mejia's night as Julio De La Cruz came out of the bullpen for the B-Mets. Crozier advanced the runners over with a groundout, and Waring cleared the bases with a towering home run over the secondary wall in left field. It was Waring's 27th home run of the season, and gave the slugger 95 RBI in 129 games between Frederick and Bowie on the year.

"I put two good swings on two good pitches," Waring said. "I'm just trying to stay relaxed and patient at the plate, I was in a funk in Frederick but tonight I felt like I was being more patient and seeing the ball out of the hand."

Johnson remained in control over the Binghamton offense, but faced a jam in the fourth inning as D.J. Wabick drew a leadoff walk and stole second with two outs to put a runner in scoring position. Jose Coronado followed with the first Binghamton hit of the game, a double into the right-center field gap that scored the only run of the night for the B-Mets. The right-hander admitted that despite not allowing a hit until the fourth inning, he was still frustrated with his control after walking three early in the game.

"Going out in the fifth inning I made an adjustment and felt great over the last two innings," Johnson said. "It's just one of those days where you feel awful the first four innings but you don't give up a hit."

Johnson set down six of his last seven, departing the game after 6.0 innings of work allowing one earned run on two hits while walking three and striking eight.

Right-hander Brian Parker took over to start the seventh inning, making his Baysox debut after appearing in 35 games for Frederick on the season. The right-hander allowed two walks, but struck out three and held Binghamton scoreless over the last 3.0 innings to earn his first save.

"The manager said he needed some guys out of the pen tonight, and I'd been down for five days so I expected to come out here and throw a little bit," Parker said. "It's pretty cool to come out here and help these guys, watching them grow and prosper as baseball players as we look to make that push (for the playoffs)."

With the win and losses by Reading and Erie, the Baysox move into third place and sit 2.0 games behind the Phillies for second place in the Southern Division. Tomorrow, RHP Ryohei Tanaka (4-2, 2.23) takes the mound for the Baysox against LHP Eric Niesen (3-6, 5.24).
