Rock Cats Have Two Late Season Roster Moves
September 1, 2009 - Eastern League (EL1)
New Britain Rock Cats News Release
New Britain, CT - The New Britain Rock Cats of the Eastern League announced two roster moves today, with one involving the departure of a 2009 Eastern League All-Star for international competition in the 2009 World Baseball Cup. The associated details are as follows:
OF Rene Tosoni, the 23-year-old 2009 Eastern League All-Star from British Columbia, Canada, departed New Britain today to join Team Canada in advance of the September 9 start of the World Baseball Cup competition in Europe. There are twenty-two national teams - including the USA - beginning first round play at five different European locations next week. Tosoni, who was also the MVP of the 2009 Futures Game, is one of fifteen players in the Minnesota farm system who will be participating in this year's World Baseball Cup. He has been placed on New Britain's Temporary Inactive List.
The 6'0"/190-pound Tosoni was an outstanding contributor in his first season in New Britain. Appearing in 122 games, the former 36th Round pick of the Twins in the 2005 Draft, banged out 115 Hits - including 25 Doubles, 4 Triples and 15 HRs - en route to compiling a .271 Batting Average in his AA debut. In possession of an outstanding throwing arm, the left-handed hitting Outfielder was leading all New Britain hitters at the time of his departure with 71 RBI. His .454 Slugging Percentage also led the 2009 Rock Cats.
INF Yangervis Solarte, a 22-year-old switch hitter from Valencia, Venezuela, joins the Rock Cats today from Ft. Myers in Florida State League. He comes to Connecticut from the Twins' Extended Spring Training facility in Ft. Myers where he had been rehabbing from a May 4th surgery to repair a torn labrum. He suffered the injury after playing just four games for the Miracle this season in Ft. Myers. In 2007, the 5'11"/180-pound Solarte batted .303 for the Gulf Coast (Rookie) League Twins.
