New Britain Rock Cats News Release

New Britain, CT - Mike McCardell out-dueled Reading's Mike Cisco and Alex Burnett slammed the door as the Rock Cats shutout the Phillies, 2-0 on Tuesday night. The Rock Cats (68-67) remain one game ahead of the Trenton Thunder for the second and final playoff spot in the Northern Division.

The hot-hitting Wilson Ramos - who entered the game with a .371 mark in the last 10 games - broke a scoreless tie when his line drive base hit to right field knocked in Alejandro Machado for the 1-0 lead.

The Rock Cats tacked on another run in the eighth when Whit Robbins led off with a double and scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Yangervis Solarte. Relief pitcher Sergio Escalona fielded the ball and fired to third in an attempt to nab Robbins, but third baseman Neil Sellers missed the ball and Robbins scored.

McCardell (4-2) dominated through seven shutout innings, limiting the Phillies to five hits and striking out eight. Burnett struck out three in two scoreless innings.

Cisco was nearly as impressive as McCardell as he allowed just three hits and struck out five in 6 2/3 innings. He came away with the no-decision. Escalona (1-2) suffered the loss. Kevin Mahar had three hits for the R-Phils.
