Chesapeake Baysox News Release

READING, Penn. - Bonus baseball was the theme of the night in Reading, but the Phillies came out with a pair of extra-inning wins over the Baysox in a doubleheader Monday night at First Energy Stadium. Reading broke through in the 11th with a 5-4 victory in game one, and walked off again in the nightcap with a 4-3 win in nine innings. The Baysox fall to 68-66 on the season, 3.0 games behind the Phillies for second place in the Southern Division.

In game one, the Baysox offense brought a pair of runs across in the second against Reading left-hander Yohan Flande to take an early lead. Left fielder Dave Krynzel singled to start the inning and designated hitter Adam Donachie followed with an RBI double to bring across the first run. Donachie came around to score two batters later, as first baseman Paco Figueroa laced a two-out RBI single.

Reading stormed back in the bottom of the inning against right-hander Tim Bascom, plating three runs to jump back out in front. With two runners on and two outs, Dominic Brown took a Bascom into right field for a base-clearing triple. Kevin Mahar followed with an RBI single, bringing home Brown and putting the Reading on top 3-2.

The lead would be short lived, as the Baysox came back to add a single run in the top of the third inning to tie the game at three. Right fielder Ambiorix Concepcion singled to start the inning, advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by second baseman Miguel Abreu. One batter later, Krynzel came through with an RBI single to center field, scoring Concepcion to make the score 3-3.

Reading broke the tie in the bottom of the fifth inning, but the Baysox quickly responded with a run in the top of the sixth. Mahar briefly put Reading ahead with his second RBI single, bringing home his 49th RBI of the season. The Baysox came right back as Abreu came through with a two-out double, scoring on a single by catcher Steve Torrealba to tie the score at four apiece.

The Baysox bullpen would keep the Reading bats at bay as the teams remained scoreless until the 11th inning. Left-hander Chad Thall tossed a season-high 3.1 scoreless innings before being replaced by right-hander Ryan Ouellette with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning.

The Phillies finally broke through in the 11th inning against Ouellette, as Freddy Galvis lead off the inning with a single. After advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt, Galvis moved to third on a single by Quintin Berry to put runners at the corners with one out. Mike Spidale came through with an infield single to the shortstop, scoring Galvis to give the Phillies the 5-4 win.

In game two, Ryan Rodriguez took the mound for the Baysox in his second start of the season. The left-hander got through the first three innings unscathed before running into trouble in the fourth, as Mahar singled with two outs and came around to score on an RBI double by Neil Sellers.

The Baysox tallied a run in the top of the fifth to tie the score at one. Right fielder Joe Nowicki doubled with one out to start the rally, coming around to score on a sacrifice fly by shortstop Jason White. Nowicki had two hits on the night, playing in his first game since being placed on the disabled list on July 21 with an ankle injury.

Reading got to Rodriguez again in the bottom of the inning, plating two runs to take a 3-1 lead. The left-hander loaded the bases with nobody out, before walking Berry to force in a Phillies run. Right-hander Eddie Gamboa came on for the Baysox, and Spidale greeted him with an RBI single to bring another run home for Reading.

Much like the previous inning, the Baysox offense matched the Phillies output, plating two runs to tie the score at three. Designated hitter Josh Bell singled to start the inning, moving to second on a walk by first baseman Eric Crozier. A sacrifice bunt by Abreu moved the runners into scoring position, and Krynzel followed with a two-run single to even the score. Krynzel finished the doubleheader 3-for-8, driving home three and scoring another run for the Baysox on the night.

Gamboa and right-hander Luis Lebron held Reading scoreless over 4.0 innings, but the Baysox offense was unable to muster any offense as the two teams went into extra-innings.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, Reading mounted a rally against Baysox right-hander Fredy Deza. Berry singled to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Spidale. After an intentional walk to Brown, Mahar came through with single to left as Berry scampered across with winning run to give Reading their second walk-off win of the night. Mahar finished the doubleheader 4-for-10, scoring a run and driving in three in the sweep.

The Baysox finish the season 32-38 on the road, heading back to Bowie to begin an eight-game home stand to end the regular season. Tomorrow, the Binghamton Mets come to town to begin a three-game set at Prince George's Stadium. RHP Steve Johnson (1-2, 3.55) takes the mound for the Baysox against B-Mets RHP Jenrry Mejia (0-4, 4.67). Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
