Trenton Thunder News Release
(Trenton, NJ)- Portland Starting Pitcher Junichi Tazawa tossed five strong innings to lead the Sea Dogs to a 5-2 win over Trenton on Friday night from Waterfront Park. Portland has now won five of the eight games against Thunder so far in the season-series.
Portland jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning. After a single by First baseman Lars Anderson, Designated hitter Jon Still connected on a two-run home run off of Trenton Starting Pitcher Ryan Pope (3-6). Later in the frame, Center fielder Josh Reddick produced an RBI double to plate Right fielder Jason Place and increase the lead to 3-0. Portland added a run in the third inning on an RBI infield single by Still to extend the lead to 4-0. Still finished the game 2 x 5 with a run, and three RBI. The Sea Dogs made it 5-0 in the top of the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly RBI by Left fielder Ryan Kalish.
Trenton responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning. With two outs in the frame, Designated Hitter Noah Hall doubled. He scored on an RBI single by First Baseman Chris Malec. Hall extended his hitting streak to eight games. Malec also extended his hitting streak to eight games with a 2 x 4 performance. Trenton closed the gap to 5-2 in the sixth inning on an RBI ground out by Hall.
Trenton had its lead-off man on base in the final five innings of the game. But, the Thunder were only able to score one run over the final five innings of the game. Trenton Outfielder Richie Robnett had his first three-hit game for the Thunder as he went 3 x 4 in the game. Four Portland players had multi-hit games, including Anderson who finished the contest 2 x 4 with a run and a walk.
Pope allowed six hits and five runs (three earned) in four innings. He walked a season-high four and struck out two. Pope had only allowed one run total in his first two starts against the Sea Dogs this season. Trenton's bullpen tossed five scoreless innings in relief of Pope. Portland Tazawa (9-5) yielded only five hits and on run over five innings. He notched his third win in three starts against the Thunder this season. Portland Reliever Bryce Cox picked up his seventh save in eight opportunities with two scoreless innings.
